He's thinking about the 08 because there have been a few stories regarding the transmission being an issue in 1st and 2nd gear in prior years and some complaints about the Z06's steering, though personally I dont know how much of an improvement the 08 will be vs 07 or 06.

For the people who have tracked their Z06s or have buddies who have, is it worth paying the extra for an 08 to get peace of mind, or are there more horror stories on the net about the prior years than the number of people that actually experienced issues.

I have an '07 prepped of road course work and a bone stock '08 427 Edition. I have spent some time on the road course in both cars and have been around and talked to several 2006 - 2007 & 2008 Z06 owners who do some track days. It seems that all years have their own little problems. I honestly can not really tell the difference between the '07 & '08 steering and tranny or the difference in the shocks.

If you are looking for a car that is more for the street with just a few track days here and there and the interior makes a difference - go with the 2008 or new. The interior is that much better.

If you plan on modding the car for more track action. Get a good dealer on a low mileage '06 or '07.

You stated 50+ track days a year. That is a lot of time on the track and will be considerable wear and tear on any street car.

Safety first - Seats and harness are a must.
Brakes - you will shred the stock brakes in no time.
Seat time - the driver mod is the biggest improvement to be made.
Suspension and tires. If you upgrade the suspension and put on sticky tires you will have to upgrade the dry sump.
