Bugatti today announced the launch of an open-top version of its 250-mile-per-hour Veyron supercar. Set to be unveiled at this year’s Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance, on August 16th, the Veyron Grand Sport retains the coupe’s 16-cylinder engine and 1001 horsepower output.
Following the car’s unveiling, Bugatti plans to pre-sell the very first car at the renown Gooding auction at the Equestrian Center at Pebble Beach. Actual production will begin in Spring 2009.
The car “incorporates innovative structural solutions, designed to ensure the roadster offers the same extremely high levels of performance and passive safety as the coupe version,” the company said in a statement to the press.
MSRP pricing for the Grand Sport remains unknown, but we suspect it will command a considerable premium over the already stratospheric price of the $1.3 million Veyron.
The roof is a relatively simple targa top configuration, rather than a convertible setup. The owner must simply remove the top panel above the two seats to enjoy the open air. It’s not known if there is space onboard the car to stow the roof panel, or if it must be left at home, as is the case with many targa vehicles.
Stay tuned for full details and more images later this month.

The ultimate roadster!
Hacking off part of the roof on a car like this seems like a bad idea. I'm sure Bugatti knows what they're doing, but I wonder how they plan to keep the roof on at speeds in excess of 200 mph and higher.
The same way Koenigsegg & Porsche have done it.

from what i heard you can go up to 230 in this car with the targa roof ON. But with the issue of being able to take it with you when you want to travel with it off, not going to happen. You have to have two people to take off the hard roof and you have to leave it at home. But if you are caught in the rain, bugatti patented and came up with a super smart idea, a temporary soft top that is like an umbrella. it folds out like an umbrella with an unbrella type center stem, it just locks into place and your ready to go, no more fumbling with 200 different parts like the murcielago roadster. You can only ride up to 80 MPH with the soft top on. Cool huh?
