997 all the way in my opinion.
We have a 2011 997.2TT and it's very nice. Loads of go, with the suspension in normal mode very nice ride. Go to sport and you feel every imperfection and it's very tight. New DFI motor is an improvement, uses zero oil, very smooth and quiet. 6 speed MT is the same one P has used forever, very smooth and positive shifting [ 10,000% better than a cayman for example ] .

If you are able to afford a 997 Turbo go for it, it's much better.
Other than all the things mentioned above, I feel the main things are:
1) The new turbo technology with variable pitch, this is a HUGE improvement over the 996TT, the 997TT engine is just in a whole different level in terms of refinement, turbo lag and stock power. The maximum torque arrive MUCH earlier than the 996TT and also stays longer (996TT max torque 2700-4600rpm -- 997.1TT max torque 1950-5000rpm).
2) In low RPM's the 996TT engine is not very refined, and the turbo doesn't kick in nearly as smooth as in the 997TT, at least in stock form. This is most noticeable around town...
3) Interior is much better and the stereo is a HUGE improvement over the sound I have in my 996TT. Also in the 997TT navigation is standard and good.
4) It's nice to have the suspension setting button in the 997TT.
