VW Beetle-R
VW Beetle-R
fresh photos from the L.A. Motorshow.
This is still a concept car, but it looks distinctly production-ready. Expect VW to roll it out with a price tag and a power figure (240 HP?) some time in the new year. The R is differentiated from the standard 2012 Volkswagen Beetle by the same wheels as the Scirocco R and Golf R, just here they're 20 instead of 19 inches. Blue brake calipers are visible through the five triple spokes. The front and rear bumpers are now 1.2 inches wider and styled much more aggressively. That big lower grille feeds both the engine and the brakes with cool air. There's also that massive rear wing, which VW claims does actually generate downforce and a quad exhaust system.

i was a huge fan of the RSi and was hoping this would be similar, but its not quite the same. i gave up on that dream, though... short of moving to Europe, there is no way i can have one here.

Anyone with a performance mind to drive a car to speeds needing a wing that big to provide high-speed stability is not going to choose a car with FWD, due to the nature of FWD cars in terms of weight shift, understeer, etc. Unless the aero on the new new beetle is so bad that the wing is needed at 70mph...

If it's AWD then we'd need to know how they intend to split the F/R distribution of power to determine how serious the sporting intentions are.

My opinion overlays perfectly on top of this.
This is a pointless car, as anybody who wants a performance car would most likely purchase something better suited for it. The target audience would be diehard VW fans, and Beetle fans at that - which most likely consist of women.
