O2 sensor locked out: Why?

I took my car for it's first smog test this week and it failed a readiness test. Porsche stated that this was due to my O2 sensor being locked out.

Any idea why a tuner would lock out the O2 sensor?

Thanks

1 of 2 things could be happening.

1. You car was not warmed up. The sensor failed because the car was not at operating temperature. If you hook up Durametric, you could see:

Catalytic Converter Eff.----Not ready or failed
Heated Oxygen Sensor----Not Ready or failed
Secondary Air System----Not Ready or failed

Often times your car needs to be at operating temperature for the sensors to provide correct data.

2. Your tuner turned off the sensor. Sometimes they do this to prevent CELs that would be triggered due to the type of cats (or lack thereof.)

Yes, Porsche verified that the sensor was turned off and the car was good and hot when it went in for the check. I will call Stef a bit later today and talk to him about the EP2 on my car but I'm pretty sure the EP series has no issues with CEL lights.

I just want to check and see if there might be a technical or performance related reason for turning off the O2 sensor. Either way its back to the tuner for a fix.......

Some tuners (including EVOMS) sometimes turn off the secondary O2 sensors. The same thing happened to me so SharkWerks just turned it back on and I have not had another problem.

Thanks, This is what I suspect, I will take it down to EVOM's later this week and see what they say.

I agree with sparkhill, I do not think a technical or mechanical problem with your cats or sensors would turn off the sensor - only programming can do that.

Closing out this post: It was the O2 sensor lockout. My tuner made the change and took it to the emissions test site to make sure all was well, I'm back on the road.
