Question Alcantara steering wheels - do they last?

Hi All,

The recent steering wheel threads have gotten me enviously thinking about a full or partial alcantara-covered wheel. Does anyone have input on how well the material holds-up to street usage?

Cheers,

I have one factory fitted to my C63 performance pack edition which has gone a bit shiny after 3 years use, my hands are never sweaty so might wear faster depending on how your hands are. Never drove with gloves on either, just general use. Don't think there is a way of fixing them without trimming with alcantara again...
Would go for a partial alcantara steering wheel IMO.

alcantara eventually wears out, i have it on my turbo and m3 and they get shiny around the area where you hold it often even for street use. Partial would be the best as suggested by c63.

Not a fan, alcantara parts on areas you don't touch much, as far as shift ***** and steering wheels, I would stick with leather or carbon fiber.

I have an alcantara/cf MACarbon wheel in my 996tt and it still looks great. It depends on quality of the materials used as well as care for it. If you are someone that uses lotions or hand cream or have oily skin that would probably kill it pretty quick.

Thanks guys. I have mainly seen alcantara wheels on the track-oriented cars which are often used with gloves and don't see the miles/hours of use as a street car. So there is probably a good reason! I will look at a partial design with smooth leather on the surfaces that get touched most.

4flynlow is infamous around these parts
Alcantara looks and feels great but is really intended to be used with gloves.
Get some driving gloves and enjoy!
