HELP pls: Loud clunk noise from windows mechanism when door closes - cause?

When we open our car's door, the windows rolls down a tiny little bit automatically; when we close the door, same windows rolls up and closes tight.

There seems to be a problem in my car such that when I close the door, there is a loud clunk noise from the windows mechanism. Inspecting it closely, it appears the windows does NOT roll down anymore when door is opened, and therefore when door is closed, the windows tries to roll up from the already max up positiion, and this is when the loud clunk happens. Otherwise, windows rolls up and down without any noise or problem.

In other words, it seems to be an electronic problem, and not a mechanical problem. I am trying to decide whether to use indi shop or the dealer. Any suggestion/advice as to cause, cost to fix, etc? Is there some electronic module that controls this function?

Did you try and reset the window? I think you raise the window but hold down the button for 5 seconds. Forget if it was up or down but try both!

wife's 07 BoxsterS had this issue on pass side- no clunk but window didn't drop- it did make some noise when closing door was up too far. i had ext warranty - think it was my window regulator which is known issue- can't tell you cost- sorry. Driver side had inside door opening mechanism loose & window didn't drop- This was also known issue & repaired with ext warranty.
I saw some posts here or RL or P9 about replacing window regulator or a switch. Believe it's either the switch or window regular

Like another member stated, not quite sure on the cost but I do know that the module that controls this functionality, (window up/down when door is open/closed) does go out from time to time. Yours likely needs to be replaced.

I'd call your dealer and indi to compare price, as this repair is easy to quote over the phone.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! Gmoney I will try to reset but I think it's the windows "regulator" module that is malfunctioning. It appears this is not an unusual failure:

Bought my car to Lucent in West LA to repair this clunk. As it turned out, in my car it was not the windows module behind the inside door handle as in the thread I quoted above, but is the whole door latch with built in sensor (the one towards the rear of the door, with the latch), a big heavy thing the size of my hand. Will post pics later.

Tom figured out what was needed fairly quickly even though I, the internet "expert", had told him the wrong thing (windows module). As usual Tom is such a cheap guy - the whole thing costs about $300, labor included. (Thanks Tom.)

The part number of this "door lock actuator" is 3D1 837 015 C; it looks like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GENUINE-...eee5de&vxp=mtr
