How strong is 997tt manual gearbox? Is losing 3rd gear ordinary?
How strong is 997tt manual gearbox? Is losing 3rd gear ordinary?
Will install this week a new 997tt gearbox to 996tt.
I have a 996tt track car and have destroyed at least three times the 3rd gear. They just don't last at all, as majority of the driving happens on 3rd gear and of course I have added boost, power and torque, however only at 800Nm...
I believe it's the heat that is partly the reason for my 3rd gear failures, so I might still be soon in problems as the 997tt gearbox doesn't have a cooler. However, many friends have destroyed 996tt/gt2 3rd gears even with the cooler installed... So I think I will be better of with this 997tt box that has the improved 3rd gear...
Anyways, how strong is the 997tt gearbox? What's the ordinary fault for the box? Still the 3rd gear or something else?
I am just wondering do you think my new box will last one season or two seasons...
I will of course change transmission oil regularly.

997 tranny is stronger than a 996 tranny.
if youre interested i have a complete 997 turbo tranny from my car (entire unit, including diff and flywheel).
OR you can get a fully built tranny. it all depends on how much u want to spend.

If you have 996tt, do 997 gt2rs gears... 1st,2nd,3rd... all are like 50% stronger and 1st gear is longer.. everything OEM, fits nice and holds the abuse very well... mine resists without problems @1000+ nm
I still have my last set that was affected a bit by second gear pop-out and second gear is just slightly brushed, I changed everything to be sure will hold my next build... I didnt have the time to find the PN for the second gear so I bought again everything.. 1st,2nd, and the mainshaft... If you need it I can let it go very cheap, add a 3rd gear and you are done.. PM me if you need the PNs...

Rix- yup. 996 gearbox in good condition, (5-6g's), gt2rs gears 1-6 (3.5k), LSD w/ guards clutch packs (~2k) = unbeatable setup
thats exactly what the 997 gt2rs has too.
