Newbie help please - IMS bearing concern
I am actively wanting to purchase a used Porsche 911 Turbo. Not being familiar with Porsche until recently, I was introduced to the IMS bearing red flag. I have read that engine changes from 2009 to present do not have that configuration and problem. However, I have heard mixed comments if the "Turbo" version of previous 2007-2008 models can have this issue or not. From a price standpoint and my intended road/track use, I am keenly interested in this module range.
Is there something different about the 07-08 vintage turbo engine that gets around the IMS bearing concern? Frankly, the risk seems too great and I want to avoid that potential problem and will stick with 2009 if necessary. Thanks for help.

The short answer is 'no' - no IMS issues with the Turbo because it is a completely different engine design. There is a lot of information about this and doing the research is a great way to learn about the car.
It's what I did, and happy in the learning... and the Turbo I bought :-)

The 997.1TT has the dry sump mezger engine that does not share the IMS problem with non turbo engines. Beginning in 2010, the 997.2TT began using a non-dry sump DFI engine. Plenty of discussions on the pros and cons of each engine on this forum. You can begin by doing a search on the differences between 997.1TT and 997.2TT. Many opinions on which is better.
