GMG LMS harness roll bar

I recently purchased a used 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo with intentions to track it occasionally. So, I wanted to get a more robust roll bar installed for additional safety. I searched the internet for the right aftermarket product with the least intrusion to the interior. I bought the GMG LMS Harness roll bar for what was supposed to be a “no cutting” required install with all attachment bolting directly into the 4 seat belt anchor locations.

I consider myself an above average DIY mechanic and normally cringe at the thought of taking one of my vehicles or motorcycles into a shop. Boy, was that a mistake. The roll bar manufacturing and custom paint was fantastic from GMG and it was extremely tight as expected. However, it did not come with any instructions, install sequence, words of wisdom, lessons learned, etc to help the DIY installer. I actually attempted to install over the Easter weekend and quickly started running into conflicts. I sent a random email to GMG and much to my surprise, was quickly returned email with contacts of one of the installers Sergey. Sergey was super helpful and we exchanged emails and photos throughout the Saturday and Sunday trying to install. In that process, I accidently broke the windshield and cross threaded one of the four attachment locations with fine threads.

To make a long story short and not relieve the pain, I ultimately got the back two anchor points done using an assortment of pry bars and brute strength. Then, the show stopper, the front attachment points were being held off the bolt location by ~1 ˝” due to interior carpeted panel interference. Come to find out, the panel must be removed and cut on backside to allow it to compress. So, chicken or egg, still don’t understand how someone would know how/where to trim until get bar install that close, but too late at that point because bar is so tight it would not allow the panel removal. At this stage, I was pissed and pulled everything out, put back to normal, and was preparing to send back for refund.

Needless to say, I sent an email to GMG team late Sunday night and to my surprise, the owner James reached out to me on Monday morning after catching up with the weekend correspondence from Sergey. GMG went way beyond the normal call of duty, super responsive, and made arrangements with a local race shop to install the roll bar on their tab if I was interested. Keep in mind, this cost GMG much more than simply return shipping since they reimbursed that shop for their time. Their subsequent install went great and finished with great product in my car. I truly wish GMG shop was in Houston area, not Santa Ana, for future car modification. GMG is rare the way they elevated customer service to the highest priority even when it costs them money.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I recently installed an RSS 930 bar in my car. It was a pain! Took my wife and myself doing squats against the dash board to get things lined up to bolt.

A buddy of mine offered to help me, I replied after the install; why the hell would you do that? Its like a friend with a truck.

Glad you got the support and finally got it installed.

GMG, Great support!

the easiest way to install any of these 4 point bars is to not use the bolts at all. install the bar without the bushings.i use a threaded rod and thread it into the mounting holes sans. bushing. once its threaded in use a small amount of grease on the bushings and slide them over the rod. i use a deep well socket and knock the bushing into place. then using a flat washer and a nylock nut finish it up. remove is simple just double nut the rod and remove it then the bar. this keeps you from messing up the threads in the car since theres no tension on the threads when the rod is installed

Fitment issues

I recently installed this roll bar in my 2008 911 Carrera S and cutting IS DEFINITELY required. As supplied, the forward hoop of the LMS roll bar comes into contact with a plastic trim piece underneath the carpet. This piece must be removed and cut to allow room for the roll bar.

To access this piece, you must remove the BOSE subwoofer (if you have one), both interior rear panels, and the interior door sills (where the trunk/hood buttons sit on the driver side and the random "coin purse" sits on the passenger side).

At this point, you can pull the carpet back and fully remove the interior plastic trim piece which sits under the carpet. This plastic guard runs from the front of the door opening to the back seat and protects some wiring and wiring harnesses.

I have some pictures attached below that correlate to the issues I just mentioned. With my roll bar installed, the carped next to the bar is somewhat squeezed against the side of the car down near the factory seat belt mounting point. In general, the bar sits right next to the plastic interior trim from floor to ceiling.

With all that said, I love the roll bar. I get full range of motion out of my seats and almost full use of the back seat area for weekend trip supplies. I also haven't lost any visibility out the rear window as all the cross-bracing sits below my field of view.

The powder coating was done in-house at GMG and they painted it to match my interior color upon my request. I only had to tell them the year of my car and that the interior was gray - they had leather samples on-hand to match with a custom paint.
