Gear whine sound
Gear whine sound
Hi All,
Going to schedule my car to get into the shop for diagnostic but in the meantime while I wait.....
I'm hearing a distinct whine...sounds like gear whine (kinda like when reversing). It is audible in 1st and 2nd under throttle, coast, and deceleration but only with the clutch engaged. With the clutch disengaged, the sound immediately goes away. Also, the sound is gone when in 3rd or any higher gear. (It is possible there is some whine in the higher gears but I cannot hear it. I do have a decat exhaust so it tends to drown out other sounds).
If I'm at a constant speed/rpm in 2nd... say 22mph for example, the sound is definitely there but if I shift to 3rd at 22mph (about 1500 rpm) and maintain speed, the sound is not there. I did this test to try and keep the exhaust as quite as possible.
The whine increases with rpm. It is less audible when the car is cold and louder after it's been driven a bit.
I do believe it's from the rear of the car and not the front diff but I'm still trying to verify.
I'll try to get a vid but I won't be able to drive my car for a few days for some other non-related reasons.
I've searched and read quite a few articles on pinion bearings, thrust bearings, etc. Whats odd is from everything I've read, it seems those sounds seem to present themselves at higher speeds while being relatively quite in the lower gears. Exactly opposite of what I have going on.
In any case, figured I'd share here and see if anyone else has had this experience.
Thanks!
Tom
