Do you have an intermix? A blown head gasket can blast water past the seals in the cylinder water jacket. You are basically looking at a whole top end build.

Head gasket failure for the pre-DFI engines rare. Most of the time the problem is a cracked head.

If your car has a DFI engine? Who knows? Could be a cracked head. Could be a bad head gasket.

In either case the head can almost certainly be repaired (though of course it depends upon where the crack is and how bad it is, etc.) or a bad head gasket replaced but of course the head has to come off and this may require the engine be dropped.

My engine repair experience is years (decades... sigh...) out of date but one concern about a leaking head gasket was the head or block deck could suffer some "erosion" (this in the era of cast iron blocks/heads) and a proper repair could require the block deck be resurfaced -- a "skin" cut -- and the same for the head.

Also, both the deck and head would be checked for straightness/flatness and brought into spec in this regard if out of spec. A severe out of spec in this regard could result in having to trash the head. A severely out of spec block was very rare.

Also, oil contamination with coolant (anti-freeze) or coolant contamination with oil was a real concern. One doesn't want to run the engine with coolant in the oil -- the anti-freeze compounds can glaze the cylinder and affect ring/cylinder sealing -- and the oil in the coolant can degrade any "rubber" coolant hoses and the like.

So regardless if a bad gasket or a cracked head you want to get this dealt with pronto. And in the meantime avoid running the engine.

when turning up the power. headgasket failure is not uncommon on higher hp modified turbo cars.

OP any picture of where the coolant is coming from?
