TPMS prices and questions.

Just got myself a set of spare rims/tires (take offs)on ebay, saved a ton of money and was happy to know that even if something happens to the rims, I got a full set as backup.

However I did notice this set doesn't have TPMS, guess the previous owner swapped it into his aftermarket wheels.

Tirerack is quoting me $240 EACH for the sensors, which just sounds too high. Does anyone know how much dealers charge? What about brands that are compatible, we all know AM went for an aftermarket solution. Heard they're good for 5-7 years or so before the battery goes low.

Finally, if you run without sensors, do you constantly get an error or only when the car starts up?

I got myself also a pair of rims out of ebay. Although they had sensors, this weren't compatible with my MY2011 receiver, which is a completely different brand and shows the tyre pressure on the display.

I have been quoted 1000 Eur (around 1400$) for all 4 , allthough my dealer offered to take my old sensors in for a good amount. I ran this winter season without sensors, symptoms: you loose for about 2 minutes the numeric speed display after the car finds out it cannot communicate with the rims. So you have speed display for about 3-4 minutes after starting, then you get an error for about 2 minutes. After that you can reset it. The yellow error light stays on though. On the pre-MY2011 receivers, there seems to be a trick where you can switch the receiver off, so you don't get any error message. With MY2011 this trick is gone, so I'll buy the sensors before winter.

I was quoted $242.11 each by a nearby AM dealer. That's $968.44 for four.
