New Vantage buyer with questions
New Vantage buyer with questions
Hello gentlemen.
I am interested in a 4.3L manual Vantage for around $70k or less. It seems that there are quite a few '06-'07 on the 'net now for $60k-$70k. The newer 4.7L cars seem to bump the price considerably and out of my price range.
What buying tips would you have? Are there certain configurations/equipment/model years to stay away from? While inspecting the car before purchase, anything key to look at?
I originally was looking for a '911 Turbo. I have found 2008 911 Turbos for as low as $70k with 40k miles. That was until I found out I could get a Vantage for the same price. Now the curious thing is that NADA puts a 2008 911 Turbo with 40k miles with a high retail value of $84k (with them selling at ~$70-72k) and the NADA puts a 2007 Vantage (no mileage input allowed) with a high retail value of only $66,800 but with them advertised for around ~$70k. I thought that was interesting.
Now the 911 Turbo would be the "logical" speed/reliability choice but the Vantage with its rare gorgeous looks, higher quality interior and killer sound has won me over. Ever since I saw the pictures of the D2Forged VS1 Vantage I was completely hooked. The Porsche looks like a grocery getter compared.
What maintenance issues are common on the early Vantages? I've read online about transmission/clutch issues. What is the problem there and how do you avoid it? What kind of routine maintenance is required and the costs associated with it? I usually do all of my own oil changes etc.
I've read that the stock 4.3L might be a bit under powered for the "character" of the car. I've also read "007 Vantage's" post about the ECU tune bumping the HP up to ~420 right off the bat which sounds sweet. A future SC kit would also not be out of the question.
I look forward to getting my Vantage and slapping some D2Forged VS1 wheels on it with some lowered coil overs. I appreciate any input you guys can provide!

when it comes to power you can't compare the turbo with the vantage. no ecu tune, exhaust, will make up the difference of force induction. expect about 1500 a year in normal maintenance. clutches are doing fine for the most part, I have 25k and probably will switch mine out within 5k. The ECU tune you have read about only 1 person has it, and can't be verified by others. The gains aren't realistic although it would be nice if verified.
Check to see that the front timing cover seal has been replaced under warranty! If not it will cost you $2500-$3000k to get fixed. Under $100 in parts but 12-15 hrs labour to get at it. They have to drop the whole front subframe etc... to reach it.
I haven't heard of an 06,07 that hasn't undergone this repair.

Clutches are weak but mostly in reverse! Don't get stuck having to back up a steep incline! You will see/smell the consequences!!!
The gear ratio in reverse is much to high and the clutch seems to slip a lot if under any kind of load!

Not the fastest, nor the most reliable, nor does it have a class leading interior but its certainly the prettiest, and your neighbors wont have one. I would agree its underpowered compared to my M5 but i never feel like the car is inadequate in terms of performance. I wouldnt compare a v8v to a 911tt...i would say its in the same class as a C4s. Be prepared for brake squeal, random engine codes, failing o2 sensors, and be careful opening/closing your gas cap. I broke mine and the dealership quoted me over $400 for a replacement. If you can, stay away from the dealership for routine maintenance and exercise a bit of common sense when you read about AM's "suggested" maintenance requirements. $7000 for a brake job? Really? $500 for an oil change? Really? I bring it to my local mechanic who services high end exotic cars. He owns bmws, a maserati and alfa romeo. $150 for an oil change. $$260 for a 4 corner brake job (pads, bleed, labor) retaining the rotors. Somebody chime in if they disagree but I personally dont believe the engine, drive train, nor suspension is as complex as most make it out to be. Be sure to check the Service bulletins and cross check them off the car before buying it.
In terms of resale v8v > 911 as illustrated by your post. Just get one lol.
I will also add that the AM forum members are also very helpful and enthusiastic to help.

Thanks guys for all of the tips so far! Adulay, thanks for the message. I could not respond as I do not have 15 posts. I hate boards with restrictions like that.
CRVETR, not sure how much the soft top adds to the price. I always go for the coupe as I do not like the sun beating down on me constantly.

My V8V never leaked oil.
Mine had one oil leak and was fixed quickly and not expensive. (06 vantage.)
My car is one of the most reliable cars I ever had.
Go for it, you will never regret it. Mine is a keeper unless I buy a v12 v
