Update...the part arrived today and works like a champ. It can charge either my iPhone 3GS (which I use as an iPod for in-car music) or my iPhone 4. The phone does sit at an angle now in the armrest compartment because of the additional part but, that's a small price to pay. Thanks, karlfranz.
