New Ride
Good to hear from you again. You have always had good posts and when I saw your name, I immediately opened it. Very interested to hear your complete thoughts on the new ride. How long have you had it and what made you decide to switch?
Many of the magazines have said that the car lacks character when driving. They prefer the Ferrari 458 because they claim the McLaren has no soul - its less engaging. I have never driven the McLaren, but this seems a bit of a stretch by the journos. What is your impression? The car seems like a marvelous bit of engineering. Just curious.
The McLaren is an amazing car. Drives and handles great. Looks even better in person than in the pictures. I decided against buying one because of the hinged doors. I'm 6'5" and it was just too difficult to get in and out of the car for me. I must be getting old.
Jay: I've been watching your (former) V12 Vantage for sometime now and may pounce on it when I'm ready to move from my V8 Vantage to a V12... I like the color combo very much. Good luck with your new ride. It looks outrageous & fast.
Thanks for all of the well wishes. I had begun my interest in McLaren a number of years ago when I had the opportunity to see Ralph Laurens Orange F1. In the mean time I have enjoyed the Astons and still believe that they are the best looking cars on the road. It was my original thought to keep the V12V and have both but I just don't have the time to drive both and can't drive either to work. The V12V is the first coupe that I have owned in the last 10 years. I had hoped that the V12VR would have come to the US but I really have missed an open air car. When the time is right, I will own another.
The McLaren is like no other car that I have ever driven. It has amazing balance and stability in every situation or at least every situation that I have put it in. I don't comprehend the lack of soul or connection. I think that the better the car and less dangerous that it feels the more criticism. I have had some dangerous cars including a GT3 a Mazda RX7TT and the V12V that offered connection and soul. All of those cars required extreme focus and under certain circumstances forced the driver to back off. I know that I am not highly skilled but it is a bummer to need a track to fully enjoy a cars capability. The speeds that I cruise in now are amazing. I would not have felt as comfortable in the V12V. Now I know that there are better drivers who could handle the car but for me, the 12C is the easiest car to drive fast that I have been in.
I have optioned this car to the hilt. So I have a very pleasing final product. It is not an Aston in terms of looks but I checked every CF option including the special front bumper so I think that it looks fantastic. I looked at the 458 but the cabin feels a little busy or deco. I can't put my finger on it. The 12C has more of Porsche feel which I prefer. I don't know of another car that I would rather have right now. I guess if AM ever make a 600HP mid-engine car with the interior I had in my V12V I would change my mind. Until then, I will probably add as opposed to replace.
