Reception Quality....Serius and FM, Newer models vs Older....

Hey guys/gals, what have you........Just a quick overview of my dilemma.....My 05 db-9 is out of the stereo shop for a couple months now and it will hurt you with its volume and clarity........BUT, I don't think it could receive an FM station if you were parked in the lot of the radio station......WEAK! My aftermarket Sirius set-up works and sounds great except it is very touchy about trees, buildings, etc getting in the way of the signal and therefore breaks lock easily. My Dodge Challenger sat radio setup is rock solid compared to the Aston......Antenna placement in the Aston is not ideal......Mine is mounted at the base of the rear window BELOW the parcel shelf/deck. Can some of you guys with the newer cars with factory installations tell me TWO THINGS?........1) where are your factory antennas, both FM and sat/nav mounted.....and 2) how is your reception, both FM and sat/nav? I know a factory integrated system is usually superior to aftermarket installations(with the exception of a Linn system which is why I am here in the first place)so I am trying to optimize my system reception. Looking forward to your observations........

You're not going to like this much, but maybe you didn't really come here to hunt.

My '08 V8V has perfectly good reception of both (AM Premium Audio, no aftermarket stuff). Not suuuuuper duuuuuper great, but at least average if not even better. '08 is the year the antenna got put into the windscreen.

Sorry to hear of your PITA. At least you can really crank that half tuned static radio!

Not sure what what you mean by "hunting." To me stating it's not super duper but saying it's perfectly good doesn't tell me anything, you even state it is average..........I don't do average........It's still a DB-9 with a MUCH BETTER than stock radio..................

It's a joke about a hunter and a bear...boy scouts...long ago...never mind.

Anyhow, I just haven't done any benchmarking of FM reception so I don't know how much better it can get. I get what I've come to consider the right level of FM reception.

As for the Sat radio reception? I get about the same as when I'm in my GTI. Always have a signal unless I'm under concrete or in a very deep canyon.

Just how much "better" can radio reception get?

A lot! My Dodge Challenger and just about every other car I own (10+) is superior to my AM. The problem lies in the antenna placement and technology. I still seek someone with a new model for comparative purposes. I guarantee I will find the best available solution........no worries.......

Why didn't you have the stereo shop that did the upgrade, address that fault? How is the AM reception.

The Sirius in my '12 Vantage is inferior to my other two cars. About every couple of miles I get a one second cut out, almost like a old vinyl album skipping. The dealership is going to ask AM about this as their only prior experience with this problem was with Jaguars.

Please let us know what you find out. What about your FM reception quality? Mine is abysmal from Linn.......

I've got 2009 Premium and the FM/Sirius is fine for me. I can't compare Sirius with any of my other cars since I don't have it in any of them, but it does drop out every once in a while depending upon where I'm driving (hilly areas more than flat areas). But the FM seems comparable to my Subaru/Acura/Chevy, so it's fine.

I've only listened to FM briefly. I don't recall any cutting out, and the reception seemed fine. I'll let everyone know when I get some feedback on the Sirius problem.

There is obviously a huge difference in the reception quality between your 09 and my 05. Just another example of the gift that keeps on giving from Linn.........

For such a high end company like Linn, it is remarkable that they could provide such a dismal system. I guess being a high end home stereo designer/manufacturer doesn't necessarily translate into car audio.

The Sirius reception, and the sound quality, are excellent in my '09 V8V (Premium sound).

I emailed Linn recently and briefly stated my dissatisfation with my 950w "Premium" system and asked if there was any valid reason that it happened that way.......any constraints at all that would inhibit their ability to produce a quality product for a high end automobile. No answer as of yet and I really don't expect one. This has to be one that they would rather forget.......
