Replacing part of the docking station (start button)

Hi guys,

My 09 Vantage has a little defect in the docking station for the glass key. Apparently it fell apart in the past and it was put together in a very sloppy way. As you can see, the top section ("ENGINE") has a nasty smudge under the glass. I think the previous owner just glued it back on.

I asked the dealer how to fix it, he said I'd need to buy a new docking station. I call BS, look at this:

Does any one have any experience with this? Is it a DIY? Take into account I have worked with interior trim in the past, having replaced the whole head unit on an SLK and swapped out an ashtray in the center console of an M3. I've seen the video about taking the ski slope out and have no doubt I can do this, but I don't know if the "ENGINE" part of the button is replaceable by itself or if I will need to purchase the whole assembly...

Thanks~

There's a reason the part is sold separately and has a unique part number. I have confidence that with your skill-set, you could replace it.

The dealer is going to quote you the labor and part because they do not want you to attempt the work. The St Louis dealership I have contacted a few times almost laughs when I ask about a part that I wish to order. They snivel as if I were a 2nd grader with a glue stick. I have found every part of this car to be as straightforward to repair as all other cars I have worked on in my 25+ years of automotive experience. The only thing I find laughable is the prices the stealership charges for some very basic parts and supplies.

Yeah... Dealership quoted me $208 to "fix" the CHMSL which became unseated from one side. I did it today in 20 minutes with $0.10 in parts (washer + nut). Sad world.
