BMW Dealers will always have some 10w60 in stock if you ever in a bind, they had Castrol before and now I believe that it is Shell

 

Hi Guys, oil---10w60 Castrol or buy Rich's brand--both great and safe...threats here show many different brands. All the guys swear by their choice, but I would believe they do not drive their cars a lot of miles so no harm no foul. I use my car putting over 7600 miles on it in 2017.

On a recent trip I drove to Florida in my Aston. I have Rich's catch can on my car. It is the best investment you can make I feel. I emptied the can before I left. I checked and emptied around 3000 miles when changing my thermostat. WOW 3/4 full.My son was shocked.This can does work!

Surprisingly, I checked the oil often and no loss of oil till around 4200 miles and needed a quart. Which seems normal from reading everyone's comments.

Castrol Edge 5W-50 Model # 06250. The even spelled out the model # you should find on the bottle.


Readily available on Amazon or most auto-zones... Been running it almost 5 years now. Very little consumption. No issues.


Although my car is "Super" ... the side note on the bottle for 'Classic' cars is becoming more a reality. Potentially something to that... If I have an oil leak I haven't noticed it yet.


The printed manual is 12 years out of date for my car... I'll go with the dealer's latest TSB!

 

It's interesting that the dealer used that oil. In TSB SPL-30-0448 AM states:

Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W-60, Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 or
Castrol Formula RS 10W-60 (Recommended).
Or: Fully Synthetic
5W-50 or 10W-60 oil to specification ACEA A3/B3

Edge Syntec 5w50 does not have this rating, other weights of the same oil do

 

How about this version of the 10-60 castrol.. is this the best for the Vantage V8 2006??? edge supercar????? Its time for a change and dont want to buy the wrong stuff for this baby! Castrol has changed the oil names so many times, ive lost track . 10-60, right?

Like @handyman2009 , I also use LiquiMoly. But the stuff you're pointing to also seems to meet requirements.

The spec really is just Fully Synthetic 5W-50 or 10W-60 oil to specification ACEA A3/B3.

There was a study done by Blackstone labs exploring wear contents from different major oil brands. The results showed that of the several brands investigated, there was negligible difference in wear materials. The cheap oil did just as well, if not better than the more expensive brands. It's probably not going to convince you, but it should help to alleviate some trepidation around oil choice.

@Shortpballer - Not sure where you live, but if you are in the Boston area I have a bunch of the Castrol from my old Vantage that is of little use to me. Rapide uses Mobil1

 

can anyone answer if the "Edge" 10-60 is the right stuff Castrol, supercar series??? i know there are many good oils. i just want to stay with the TWS because thats what Aston came with.

 

I believe the TWS name was changed. All their new Castrol line is badged edge. I was getting Edge 5-20 from Wally world from my RR Evoque for a lot less than the dealer. Synthetic 10-60 of any brand should be fine.as long as it matches the owners book req. Nothing wrong with the liquid moly either.

 

The oil that was first specified in the Vantage is no longer in production. Edge 10w60 meets the requirements as do many others.

 

The Castrol name has changed numerous times over the years. Regardless it's still TWS, which is just an abbreviation of Ten-W-Sixty. Edge, Edge Sport, Formula RS..etc. The grade doesn't really matter long as it meets specification of ACEA A3/B3(meaning you won't find a 0W20 that meets requirement). The actual grade is really your choice what you prefer for protection, take a 5W50 from Mobile and same from Castrol, they meet the requirements for viscosity label but both won't be a mirror of the exact same viscosity if tested in lab(ever find a 7W53?). Another reason why most ppl that have oil consumption issues can switch to L-Moly and noticed an improvement., huge thing on Audi (if Castrol drinks, switch to Mobil, when that drinks then switch to LM..needless to say I'm at the Mobil stage in my B8S4 ..LOL)

There's dealers that will use 5W50 from Mobil1 because it's a API SJ spec oil, which is applicable to 0W40 used in the V12's. So 1 oil for 2 engines (1 item for inventory, especially if on vrac pumps). Some places even use the 0W40 in the V8's as well, mainly because it was used for heat testing and assemble in Colgne (I'm not saying to do this..but is-what-it-is). In the GT4 cars, which are the 4.7's, good amount of us was using RP as well in 10W60, the name was also on the side of the car so biased choice I guess.

 

Like a few of the others, I too use Liqui-Moly 10w60. My last two vehicles were BMW M cars and also used 10w60. Liqui-Moly has always worked best for me. Plus, its always available on amazon for roughly $100 for 10L. Great price and great oil. You can't go wrong with it.
