Question 2nd Crystal Key - Options

Yes, I am bringing this subject back...

What are the best options for a 2nd crystal key? Dealer only? Can the plastic key be converted? How has the best prices?

I've read that the plastic electronic guts can be put into the glass key holder but not oly the holder but you also need the buttons as well

Do dealers need the car for a 2nd key, or can they order a 2nd key based off the VIN?

Keys are generic, order or buy from any dealer. You need to make sure if you buy from a 3rd party that the seed code card is available, as this is what the dealer needs to program the remote functions. You can buy a glass key from Ebay and transfer over the circuit board from your already owned working plastic key. You will need to get the starting function programmed or transfer over the ID chip glued into the case. No additional parts or buttons required.

I was going to suggest buying from Aston Bits, but I see they no longer sell new keys with codes. They now cost twice what I paid 6 years ago.

I just saw on eBay this week New Crystal keys for around $900.00 that came with the code(s)...

I believe it was a USA dealer ...sold over 20 had some left.

On a new key you must have a dealer or someone that can read the code and put in memory. I do not remember exactly but I think up to five active keys can be programmed.

If you buy a new or good used fob from AM bits get the one with the buttons and transfer insides over to the fob you bought.

Some people look for keys on the net and find a crystal fob used no codes but in good shape and take guts out of the plastic fob.

Remember...no code no program of the key...me..stick no crystal key...putting money into the car so hopefully in the future...

Good luck

Oh..also I was told when I first got my car by PM by a member. Buy the stupid metal key for the doors... otherwise if something happens and that car is locked...it is the devil to get in and trying to jump start is impossible most times.

Aldv is right. Chances are you will never need the metal key. But if your battery fails with the doors locked you are in big trouble trying to get power to the car. The metal key can be obtained from AMBits. They can have it cut to your VIN number. It will allow you to open the car so you can jump start it.

I have the metal key! Sounds like buying a new crystal key is the only way to go. If the dealer charges a bunch the code my own key it could be the same price in the end, no?

Hi...new key with codes...or new key without codes and reuse your old guts from another key.

I had a plastic key done my son bought me...took a few minutes by dealer to program...I do not remember exact cost but not expensive

Also remember if just need a fob to work there is method using two programed keys and put in third key and car programs to drive...not sure on lock unlock...great for backup fob...

There is a threat or sticky here that explains...or look up Irish07 and his threats...he explained

Nice day in NJ...out driving still
