Truth or Dare: Higher mileage V12V
Truth or Dare: Higher mileage V12V
Hello and Merry Christmas!
Would you buy a 2011 V12 Vantage with 50k if it had been regularly serviced and if your plan was to drive it 2-3x per week? If so, any particular repair items to budget for? Of course, I’ll get a PPI.
Thanks.

I recently sold my 2012 V12 Vantage with about 54,000 miles on it. It took a while to sell...I think the high mileage coupled with a private seller put off a lot of people.
In addition to a PPI and all maintenance records...I would be sure to take it for a at least a 20 mile test drive.
Make sure gas cap opens when button is pressed, the leather in the front dash is in good condition (subject to shrinkage from sunlight), and the waterfall is not cracked!
None deal breakers but could be negotiated as part of sale.
By the way, the guy that bought my car got a more than a fair deal!
good Luck
Thanks,
JH

It's not an AM, but I purchased a 48k mile 2012 QP5 GTS 2 1/2 years ago, sight unseen, though I did extensive checks on provenance. No problems in over 15k miles since, and I love the car. Now, having said this, it did come with 2 remaining years of factory CPO coverage at time of my acquisition, and that was important to me. My experience suggests to me that higher mileage cars can be reliable if purchased with a history of good maintenance. The prior owner spent some $15k of repairs (covered under the CPO in the year before I acquired the car - variators, leaking steering rack, etc), but it has been super clean under my ownership, and I am a persnickity owner when it comes to maintanence. Good luck.
In the real world of used cars 5,000 mi per year isn't high. If it's been well maintained you most likely will be able to purchase it at a very reasonable price. If not there are others. Higher mileage scares allot of buyers. PPI by a well qualified tech is a good investment on your part. It sound like your purchasing it to enjoy.....hope it's the right one for you! Good luck with your search for a nice driver quality Aston.

I think you will cross into some other dimension. Has there ever been an Aston Martin with 100k miles?
The only serious issue I have ever heard of on the V12 are oiling problems and spun rod bearings on the early built engines. Even that is rare and seems more a function of hooligans who flog them before the oil is properly up to temp.
There are maintenance items like clutches and front cover oil drips that can be a little expensive to fix but are non-fatal issues.
If it’s a good car and you get to for the right price knowing that you will need to do some maintenance then why worry? Abusive idiots can own low mileage cars, but a good looking higher mileage car is probably a good indication it was owned by someone who cared.

Modern engines are good for 200k these days..I wouldn’t have thought it impossible for the AM V12 to do the same. At the end of the day 2 major factors cause depreciation...mileage and age. After a while the effect of age decreases to the point where the car begins to appreciate in value...whereas mileage continues to cause depreciation - but often not at the same rate as the appreciation due to age. If the car is mechanically sound and you get it on the cheap because of the miles, enjoy it...drive the heck out of it and then sell it at some point. Yes it won’t fetch the same money as low mileage cars...but you bought it on the cheap in the first place. I really don’t think the repair/maintenance costs will be that much higher over your ownership than a lower mileage car. The only downside will be the time-to-sell factor...
AM V-12, DB-9; 104,000 miles.

Not sure why there would be any problems if you can get 250,000 miles out of a Dodge Caravan driven by an assortment of employees over 6 years, sell and then repeat with very few issues - my work experience?
AM V-12's are hand built engines, get special oil, TLC - comes down to driver and maintenance. If the maintenance and overall condition checks out the driver probably will also.
The fear is based on what if, not on the history of the marque since Ford took it on.
