California Smog checks will now check for "illegal" software modifications

Looks like the crackdown will start sometime this month:
Hopefully tuners will go through the CARB certification steps to save us some hassle?

great, just another hoop we gotta jump through as enthusiasts. I doubt tuners will get CARB certs, cost too much. They've never been CARB legal anyhow so why would they start now

i doubt that violators will have much to worry about. i took my cayman to a smog check the other day and the guy said he couldn't do it because the engine isn't in the front, or it's in the middle, or that he couldn't see the engine or something. don't really remember what his excuse was... anyway, it's the same guy that's been doing my 2001 dodge ram 1500 and my vantage for years.

With an Alientech Powergate or some other handheld tuning device, you just flash it back to stock for smog...easy.

This is not that big a deal. At the most, Smog checks are done once a year. As part of the process for your yearly inspection, revert to the original ECU flash AFAIK is fairly straightforward. After inspection Reinstall the ECU flash and drive safe.

I was thinking about the flash to stock then flash back, I guess that it would have to be done right before the smog check if the tune was done for 200 cell cats, right? How long until the ECU detects any discrepancy between upstream and downstream O2 sensors and throws a CEL? For CA residents, there are other ways to do it so as not to have to smog every two years. I have done it for my 76 2002 that has a M42 swap for the past 9 years and just did it for my V8V.

I have a tune that specifically does not disable the CEL check so it would pass readiness check for CA SMOG. I guess that is pointless now. But judging from the fact that my CEL will come on every 100-200 miles with the tune, that would be a good rule of thumb.

LOL. You can have an old fashion V8 smogger as long as it’s registered in the right county.
