How long….

How long should the rear brake pads last. My car has 28,000 mile and the rear brake pad warning light cam on. I know the rear pad wear out quicker because of the traction control works on the rear brakes so they would wear faster.

It can vary from 10k-15k depending on how one drives and what brand of brake pads is used. OEM starts out around 7mm and others are 9mm or above. Depending on brake rotor wear to could see a warning message at around 2mm remaining. For the average basic driver get Porterfields they are above the thickness of OEM new and will last longer at well below OEM cost. Definitely not an exact replacement they work well for the cost. Depending on your mileage you need to make sure the rotors are within spec. thickness and check the wear of the handbrake pads.

How many miles would you estimate I would have before I do rotor damage? I think I will probably put no more than 400 miles if that before I put the car up for the winter.

Depends on how your driving it. @ 28k miles the rotors may be close to the wear limit and should be replaced. I would think about rotor replacement and handbrake pads as well. If it were me I'd gamble those 400 mi. And just replace everything in the spring.

Sorry but it’s an insufficiently framed question. What car? Steel or ceramic? The answers will vary.

Hi Argus,
i recently did my brakes and would definitely measure the thickness of the rotors. I put Hawk brand pads in the front which i am ok with but will likely get Portorfield next time.

Again with a manual car brakes will last a lot longer but it all depends on your driving habits

When I did the brakes on my Vantage I replaced all 4 rotors and the pads. I got the rotors new from Astonmartinbits for a very reasonable price. And like JdoubleU, I recommend Porterfield R4S pads. The performance is as good as stock, with less brake dust, less propensity to squeal, and they last longer.

I'm not sure if these parts are the same for your car, but here are the notes I made when I ordered them for my '09.

Brake rotors:
Front: 355mm Brembo 09.8780.21 (4G43-28-10265)
Rear: 330mm Brembo 09.8781.21 (4G43-28-10266)
Purchased from astonmartinbits

Brake pads:
Porterfield R4S:
AP 1165 / AP 1166

I started this thread so here is an update. I was getting the rear brake pad warning light. It would go on its own or when I braked it would go out for awhile before coming back on. I am not worried about scoring the discs because I have put just 90 miles on the car after the light came on. I figure I might put another 150 miles at the most before I put the car away for the winter. So today I was driving around a corner which activated the traction control light and not the rear brake warning light is off and has stayed off. I know the rear brakes control the wheels to take care of the traction. I still will change the brake pads this spring but I thought this was interesting enough to share with the group.
