b5 Audi S4 HELP!!

I am considering a 2000 S4 as a daily driver and to be honest I am no to knowledgeable about this particular model. What do I need to watch out for?

Heres some specs

73,642 miles
Nagaro blue/black
leather/suede interior
Auto

How do these cars hold up with high mileage?

I would never imagine myself buying an Automatic S4, what are your guys thoughts on this transmission? Keep in mind, this is a daily vehicle, it will not be tracked.

'00 Tip is the worst year of the b5 S4 you could get.
IMO '01+ 6speed would be more desirable and more reliable.
'01+ models have different differential and also the manual > auto in terms of reliability (and everything else ).

With this being said, check the k03s because they tend to go very soon and if that's the case you will be spending big $$$ on the turbos alone. Most of the guys just install k04s and get it over with.

S4 can put down some serious power if properly tuned, the stock k03s with just a chip make 306/360 or some like that.

However, if you are looking for dependable DD you might wanna look elsewhere or at least have the car throughly checked.

Good luck!

EDIT: www.audiworld.com and www.audizine.com will help you out, however, make sure that you SEARCH before you post anything on there or else you'll burn alive lol. SEARCh is your friend!

The 00 is fine, & a tip is fine. Getting a 00 tip you loose one of the trouble pars the "F" hose.

If taken care of they are super solid cars. Parts are on the expensive side, & getting at said parts can be a PITA. There is more labor hours on the S4 to do some what simple things.

Basically, the turbo's are a weak point, & of course boost leaks. But boost leaks, & bad maintaince are what kill the turbo's.

The TIP is SOLID! Much more so then the 6sp. There is a little seal in the TC that can fail, but you can't worry about it, same for the turbo's, they can last 5mi's or 250,000mi's!

There is more misinformation out there, then good information. The turbo's are not as weak as people make them out to be & the car is reliable. Most people who have problems are far from stock, beat on the car & do not do proper maintenance & take care of boost leaks.

With 70k on the car, you are looking at doing the timing belt soon. I bet the tie rod ends & control arms might need to be replaced soon.

Here is a little FAQ I wrote on another board with good info......

Not true, 00 is almost the same car, very little changed.
Diffs are all the same for all the B5 S4's
TIP VS 6sp is a opinion, not fact.
TIP is more reliable.

S4 can put down some serious power if properly tuned, the stock k03s with just a chip make 306/360 or some like that.
So true, it is not hard to make big HP from them. About $3500 invested will give you almost 300whp & well over 300w torque. Even from a tip

However, if you are looking for dependable DD you might wanna look elsewhere or at least have the car throughly checked.
Again, they are dependable, if taken care of. Mine has been trouble free for years, & it is a daily driver.

Sorry, I don't mean to bash you in any way, it's just this always comes up, & every tells me all the time, how "bad" my car is. Funny thing is most have never owned one, or even had personal friends with one. The misinformation bothers me.

Oh that's no problem man. I owned b5 a4 1.8t for couple years that I slightly modded (chip, wheels,...the usual stuff) but never s4. Therefore, I have zero first hand experience with those cars. What I posted was the feedback I got from surfing audi forums when thinking about buying S4 while back. Then I jumped over to the dark side

Nice P-car!

ok ok, What are your guys thoughts on the black/blue interior? Is it to flashy? and does the automatic or this color combo hurt the resell value? BTW this is a one owner car, and has been serviced religiously, about 6 times! Here is the free carfax link: http://www.carfax.com/cfm/ccc_Displa...DD68D3YA045212

Hate to buy it, and run into problems!!

It's the "sports" package, & it adds value. The TIPS do cost more, but they don't seam to add or subtract from the price. But there are some out there that will bash you for having a TIP.

I really hope you are not buying this car for a resale. 2 years ago when I got mine they were in the low $20's, now I see beat up ones for under $10k. So I think in a few years this car will not be worth to much, or maybe we will get lucky & the prices will start to go up a little.

I am not looking to buy it and sell it, but I am sure I only will own for 1-2 years at the most. I am going to test drive it tomorrow and see how the TIP treats me. Stealth your local, have you seen the car I have mentioned?

No, I don't know the car, is the owner in any of the local Audi scene? MOst of the local guys meet up every Wednesday night for Beer in Seattle.

If you need to scan it, I do own a Vag-com.

00 is bad. Make sure the maint. is up to date and the diverter valves are/have been replaed with Audi OE 710N or aftermarket valves. (I run aluminum FORGEs) You may may also have an issue with the throttle body boot (TBB) tear/torn and leaking. There is an easy fix with samco replacement boot but I went with the APR (www.goapr.com) bi-pipe which is all aluminum 1-piece design. If you ANY more info PM me or e-mail @ lxa308@gmail.com
