For you R8 owners: Why the R8 i/o the Gallardo?

I am looking to sell my 996TT and getting into one of these cars. What made you decide on the Audi instead of the Lambo?

I think I am stuck at the fact that its so much money for an Audi. Its kinda like the VW Phaeton a few years back.

Audi R8 = more understated, elegant, more room inside, more comfort, better daily driver, better value for money.

I may be way off on this, but isnt the R8/Gallardo 70% the same car?

From MY 06, yes. You start to see Audi interior & mechanical pieces all over 06+ Gallardos and now the V10 is available in the R8 so they're closing the gap!

If you're talking new, the difference is still price. Have you priced them both? The R8 offers a lot of bang for the buck and it can be serviced at a more "reasonable" rate (Lambo vs. Audi) and there are a lot more Audi dealers than Lambo dealers (although the Audi Dealer must be approved to sell and service the R8).

Additionally, you're a little more likely NOT to be noticed in a R8 when you stop the store on the way home. Try that in Gallardo - you'll be mobbed.

Depends what you want.

Price mostly, the r8 is half the price. The r8 is the best daily drive sportscar on the planet,I have tried everything and nothing else matches its all round blend of abilities.
What it does not do is offer you the thrills the likes of ferrari or lamborghini offer,it is just too easy to drive.
In terms of attention the r8 attracts so much I fail to see how much more the gallardo can attract.
If you want a sports car that gets you positive attention,is cheap to run relatively and is just so well resolved it is hard to find flaws then buy an r8.
If you want something to make every drive seem like a major event ,and if you want to look at possibly one of the most beautiful cars ever made every time you open your garage plump for a gallardo, but make sure you have a second car to use for when you are not in the mood.

Because the R8 looks better imo, and everybody and their brother had a Gallardo. It's old and played out, imo. Even the lp560 is still a 04 G in my eyes, though the lp is far better.

The LP560 is based on the R8 platform. The R8 is far superior to the older G in every way except straight line speed.

It's also cheaper.

In conclusion: It's unique, not so old and not so common, better, and cheaper.

As for attention, it gets a hell of a lot of attention. Same as the G, if not more.

I am looking at a V10 R8 and a Gallardo SL. Apples to apples these cars are both in the $150k range used. I can fully understand the issue with maintanance costs. But if R8s are only serviceable at certified audi dealerships, is it that cheap to maintain? I have seen both cars in person but have driven neither. I think I am really just stuck at brand worth. Many people that I have asked oftentimes say, Why would you pay that much money when at the end of the day, it's still an Audi?

I second what he said...

I don't own either one, but have driven both.

Most of the Audi dealers in Socal are authorized so there are still way more places to get the car serviced and there is no premium price for the R8 compared to an A4.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, if you're worried about paying so much for an Audi. If you look at the internals, several of the parts are stamped with Lambo and Audi logos. I would recommend you drive both, if you can, and see which one you enjoy more. The R8, BTW, does get a lot of attention too.

I can confirm this - you need to remain ultra-aware of the space around you while driving (probably true for any more commonly seen super car too). Gawkers in giant pickups running up along side you (on all sides) and kids with cell phones hanging out of cars trying to get the right pic become a real liability on the road. I had a kid in a rice rocket tailgating taking pics like mad over the steering wheel. Glad I didn't have to hit the brakes because the R8 can stop a whole lot faster than it can accelerate. People tend to forget they're driving!

+1!

There is something about the R8 that causes a lot of people to freak out on the road. It does create dangerous situations from time to time..exactly as ssaylor is describing. It's attention I'd rather not have, but I do like the car so I will suffer with it.

Well the r8 service schedule (v8) is once every 20k miles or 2 years and here in the uk is fixed at £400 ($600).Fuel economy is c.18mpg average.I have onwend my r8 for 3 years and it cost me £400 for a service and £1000 for a set of tyres, and that is it.A gallardo has to be serviced annually and would probably cost £1000,and you would need to replace the clutch every 2 years probably at £3000 a time.Average fuel consumption would be around 12-14mpg I would think.
I have just bought a G spyder to replace my r8 v8.If you have not owned an r8 then the v10 is worth trying ,to me it offers little extra over the v8 and I prefer the sound of the v8.
I bought the gallardo because it is imo one of the 3 most beautiful cars ever made ,and I spent my entire test drive laughing whilst driving it ,as much as I love the r8 if you had to criticise it you would say it lacks character/charm.I cannot now drive the r8 everyday since my customers don't like it so if I was going to have a car to use less frequently I just wanted more of an 'event' which the gallardo is.

So if you want a sportscar to drive every day buy an r8,either v8 or v10 both are utterly brilliant.
If you want a weekend car,or something just to make you smile when you feel ****,buy a gallardo.
