The Turbo S is an awesome car, but I personally would prefer the Audi. I think the R8 has an amazing design and like you said the interior and the sounds it makes are all top notch. I am an Audi guy though, and I can imagine Porsche guys see it completely differently.

There are a lot of factors though. Is this a daily driver, track car, etc?

Just please get the manual one!

I am probably getting the R tronic...am I making a huge mistake? I really don't want a manual.When I test drove the R Tronic seemed fine.I really don't want a manual...call me stupid.I also had the M5 which was horrific!!.The Audi seems much better.

Mistake? No, I would say it's about preference. R Tronic will be faster but I just like the click clack of the shifter personally. Either way great car.

The mistake would be to not get the R8 lol.

Audi and Porsche, both members of the almighty VW empire. Both share the same race drivers (Romain Dumas, Mike Rockenfeller for example, both lemans winners. ). Both great companies. Porsche with more heritage but Audi with 10 victories in le mans since 2000, both incredible companies!

Some interesting comments here.
Turbo S to R8 especially.

I saw a blue V10 yesterday and even in Dallas the R8 is sort of rare to see. Always grabs my attention.

Why are golf clubs the length they are?

I would do your homework and vette both cars out and make a decision.

Having had both the Porsche TT and now the Audi V10 I can say I am pleased with the R8 big time.

Is it as fast as the Porsche? NO but it has great fit and finish and sounds great.

If you are looking for sheer speed and a thrill ride get the Porsche. The Audi just makes a statement that the P car doesnt.

I am very enamored with the R8.

I dont miss the Porsche (yet).

I love the R-Tronic in my '10 V10. I can drive it very smoothly when using the car as a DD, or the other extreme when changing gear at WOT. Then again I loved the SMG III in my E60 M5! lol

cabman4007 that is exactly the reason for my change.I know it is not as fast as the TTS but the beautiful cabin(including stereo) and the wonderful exhaust are more important to me then sheer speed.

I just picked up my Ibis White R8 V10 a week ago and I can say with a fact that i enjoy it a lot more than my Turbo. Mind you, I had a 996 Turbo, not a 997 Turbo. The 996 Turbo was ***** to the wall fast and my suspension setup made the car feel like it was on rails. The Audi R8 feels very composed, stable, and solid. Is it fast? It doesn't feel as fast as the turbo. Does it matter? Not really. Like cabman said, the car makes a statement that the Porsche cannot. In the turbo, everyone would want to race me. In the R8, people drive beside me just to take videos. It all depends on what you are shooting for. I like the composure of the R8 a lot better than the turbo. Do I miss the speed? Of course. That's the the UR twin turbo setup will be for once I run out the factory warranty.

I ended up getting a 6-speed.

Got the
- carbon fiber sigma mirrors
- carbon fiber sigma sideblades
- enhanced leather package w/luxor beige stitching
- polished Y-spoke wheels
- carbon fiber sigma engine overlays
- carbon fiber interior overlays
- illuminated door sills
- perforated multi-function steerling wheel
- white illuminated gauges
- Black Leather dashboard

I love this car. I can't stop driving it. It's been my daily driver for the past week or so.

Having never driven the R-Tronic, I can't say what the experience would be like. All I know is that the 6-speed transmission is so smooth. The clutch engagement is almost too simple and fluid. In NYC traffic, I don't even realize that I'm driving the six-speed half the time!

I was lucky enough to receive an invite by Audi for their R8 Private Drive event in Dallas. I'm a long-time Porsche lover (and still am), but any opportunity to take a great car on the road is appreciated. We were given a brief 20 minute prep presentation and then went out for a group drive for two 20-minute sessions around Dallas (highways, city streets).

Since my GTS is a 6spd, I chose a 6-spd manual when I completed my reservation. I expected to be driving V8 coupes, but when we went out to get in our cars, I was thrilled to see the line of V10 Coupes and Convertibles. I did see one V8 Spyder, but that was it. Apparently they knew my favorite color, because we were lucky enough to be assigned the Sepang Blue with Silver Side Blades. What a gorgeous car!!!

Driving Impressions:
* WOW.
* Great Sound...absolutely astonishing. Who needs a stereo in this car? What else would you possibly want to listen to? Other than Traffic Reports...
* Great Interior (it is an Audi)...but much less legroom than the 997. My friend is 6'5" and he struggled to fit in it, which is a shame, because he would (and could) buy one on the spot if only there was another 2-3 inches.
* The drive is so much smoother than a 997. Even with the suspension set to firm, it was better than a 997 is normal mode.
* Triple digits happen very quickly, and without really noticing. I could not own this car as I'd be put behind bars.
* This could easily be a daily driver...it rides that well.
* Smaller Frunk than 997.
* Driving these cars is more of an 'event' than a 997.
* While a 997 TT is probably 'faster' than the R8, the R8 feels much more planted and stable.

After all is said and done, I'd love to have one of these in my garage, but need more income as I wouldn't feel right driving it daily.

But what a car...I'm more impressed than I expected to be. You R8 people should count yourself lucky...
I drove that exact car during the 3 PM slot on Saturday the 19th.

I have to agree with your review for the most part. I really loved the R8.
