Does the engine run?
If not, is it damaged in any way?

It's more than that. A few weeks ago a member here got rear ended at ~35mph+, and the estimate was 30k+...

I contacted Frank. Here is what he had to say...

Todd, the price has been reduced as of last night. The engine does run, I have driven the car around the parking lot, but as you can see the rear of the engine is only supported by the beam across the quarter panels above the tail light housings’ opening. The coolant pump housing is broken and the alternator bracket is also broken. One of the threaded bosses that the engine mounting plate bolts to is broken and can be welded to repair. I can see no other damage to the engine case. I ran the car on a lift and was able to shift through all of the gears with no hint of a problem. As far as body damage, 2 repair shop owners have commented that they have fixed cars worse than this one. The gaps on the doors has changed: left door gap is slightly larger, right door is slightly tighter. Both doors open and close with ease. The tub is pushed forward behind the rear wheel wells and I’m sure can be pulled back. The suspension all looks fine, nothing broken. I don’t have an estimate for the body work, no one has sat down and tried to make one as the owner said he wanted to sell it as is.
Thanks for the inquiry,
Frank

To me, sounds like this thing took quite a lick (looks like it too). As mentioned above, it was the business end that took the hit, and that's where the real value/expense is in these cars. Still intriguing to me, but too much damage and too many unknowns even at $40,000. You could poor quite a bit of money into this car and you still have a GT3 that was WRECKED HARD. Whoever buys this will have a hard time unloading it in the future even if repaired as well as possible. Most 6speeders/Rennlisters/Pelican Parts people would say run, don't walk, away. I think the owner would be better off parting it out.

the car looks like it can be fixed with ease, am not sure what the fuss is about. looks simply to me. just need to replace those parts, I've seen cars worse than this and they were able to fix them. good for anything with a fetish for the track. I would do it if it was cheaper, much cheaper.

I agree this car is not that bad it can be put on a frame rack and made whole again. It all depends on who dose the work. Any shop with a great frame man, Key word Great frame man can work this car.
The engine support rails will need the most work but its not all that bad. I plan to run down and look at this car next week so I will post or give feedback here if I get the time.

Stupid question, but is it a salvage title or clean title sale?

Title

I asked Frank, it still has a clear title because the owner hasn't reported it to the insurance company.

That sounds about right...we are fixing a turbo at my shop right now that was hit in the right front and we are at over $20,000...so I would imagine this rear end hit will be much more.

You are basically pulling the frame rails and swapping out parts...but it's the parts that add on to the total job cost very quickly.

If I hadn't just bought an E55 I think I would consider buying this one and repairing it like Joeacc did at his shop..would be a fun project.
