Have you modded one? I don't think the M2 has been out long enough to come to that conclusion. Its a turbo. It will respond well like the 1M. Look at the Dinan 1M. You can add 100 ft lbs of torque with a simple tune.
M2 stock for stock 0-60 just as fast as M3/M4. M2 weighs less, has shorter wheel base so it will handle better.
I've driven both back to back, no contest, I bought the M2. I previously owned an E46 M3 and E90 M3.
M cars are about handling. It you want to go fast in a straight line buy a Supra. (I like Supra's, its a 90"s classic like my NSX and 993 Turbo).
Another thing to consider, I also think M2 would hold its value better, there are thousands of M3/M4's sold already and your $50k M3/M4 will become a $35k car like the last gen M3.
If the OP has his heart set on an M3/M4, the cars will continue to depreciate (like all cars) and it will get down to that price.
Good Luck with your search.

I am currently considering this being an option. Wonder how hard it is to get an allocation..
