997TT Turbo Inlet Pipes DIY

I got some nice silicone turbo inlet pipes for my 997tt from carbonclutch. They came as a kit with the billet turbo bolt in adapters and a billet adapter for the vent hose on driver side, both Tim and I were really impressed with the quality and fittment, they were 5 ply silicone and the billet fittings were nicely machined and fit perfect. I took a few pics and hoping people will take advantage of this to bust the myth that a motor or trans needs to be out of the car to do the job. Tim and I did the job yesterday along with installing my IPD competition plenum and 82mm TB and the car feels great. Response is amazing and its noticeably faster.

1. unclip MAFs

2. remove airbox

3. remove the silver y pipe

4. put car up on lift or jacks

5. remove rear wheels and fender liners

6. remove plastic panels under the car

7. remove front driveshaft

8. support tranny with jack and undo the tranny mount

9. lower the jack to let the tranny hang down, this will lower the side of the motor you need to pull out the pipes.

10. unbolt both inlets from turbos and pop them out NOTE: you will need to reuse O-Rings from them so do not be quick to throw them out.

11. driver side pipe has a plastic vent hose running into that needs to be unclipped prior to removal. easy just push and pull

12. pull the driver side inlet from the bottom of the car. it is easier with two people, one pulling and one guiding from the top

13. the passenger inlet needs to be pulled down to the bottom as far as you can then cut with a saw (see pics). NOTE: put a rag or a microfiber in the turbo while cutting ! After that is done pull the hose out the top. Inlets are widest at the place where they join the airbox so top is naturally the best way but they also have a sharp bend at the bottom which gets stuck.

14. since the inlets are larger at the top we fed the new silicone inlets from top to bottom. once again two people is best, one pushes and guides and another one pulls from the bottom and lines them up.

15. reinstall and remember to connect all the vent hoses back as well as the MAF sensors. i could not believe how nice they lined up with airbox and turbos. they also suppllied all new clamps

enjoy and always DIY with friends, because its more fun !

stealthy OEM+ look

passenger side

driver side

compared vs stock pipes these are so much larger. stock pipes look very very restrictive.

stock ones are also very thick so when you look at them and think these are terrible it gets worse once you look inside and see how much worse it really is.

The fit and finish is perfect! They just disappear in the engine bay like they are camouflaged. It was really a breeze to do and I am pretty sure this job can be done without lowering the trans but you will need to cut both sides, I assume.. Mark, I think step 9 was "order wings!"

Thanks for the writeup but I'm going to take the easy way out with these pipes and have the shop install them. When they drop the engine I'm getting them to pin the coolant connections. But I am impressed that you were able to do this the way you did - well done, and I hope that they were "suicide" wings because you guys are manly men!

I did the IPD 82mm plenum and TB along with inlet pipes and seat of the pants feel is definetly better. Response is much better and i feel like the car has a better top end as well. You do hear the turbos a little more for sure but not as loud as cars that use aluminum or carbon inlet piping because sound doesnt resonate in silicone like it does in aluminum.

My new toy doesnt have ICs yet, supposed to come sometime soon so its really hard to get good data in 95 degree weather and 90% humidity.

yeah man with engine out the install is probably like 5 minutes. but with engine in it really wasnt bad. if you can install an IPD plenum you can install a set of these pipes.

Thanks for posting this. I have the AMS pipes on my car and noticed a big difference back to back when I swapped over to them. This is a great upgrade for the 997, much better bang for the buck than most mods.

One question, what intercoolers are you going with?

yeah i remember you and i talked about it and the fittment. they fit perfect, as i twisted the air box in place the plastic slid right into the inlets.

i am not sure which intercoolers. i really like the AMS coolers but at 4.5k they are kinda steep and probably over kill for me. i also dont like that they use their own Y pipe in the kit.

i have used GT2RS on my 996 and they worked good but restrictive on flow for sure when you start making power. I also used Forge which worked better and later swapped those out for EvoMS. I liked the EvoMS end tank design over Forge other than that they were very comparable.

this time around i am thinking of trying ETS coolers on the 997tt. they are good units with nice end tanks and great price point.

yea with engine out its a 5 minute job to swap inlets, but it really wasnt that hard to do it with engine in the car. 2 guys, a lift and some patience.

We had a nice cool evening here and i had the car out, it feels great.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you guys? I was going to get my coolant lines pinned but the indy shop explained to me that they aren't completely dropping the engine - probably why I'm paying for 6 hours versus other shops quoting 14 hours to remove and reinstall engine. BTW, does that sound right (the 14 hours)?
