Be careful when buying used CF stuff

Some of you may remember my recent posts asking for CF part sellers to contact me. Well, I got my wish and I wish I hadn't!

Of the items I have purchased, only the steering wheel I recently purchased from a 6'er was as described. In fact, the steering wheel that I got from Todd Darby was flawless. Thanks, Todd!

I've been buying parts for my other cars for years without ever having an issue. I wish my luck continued. All of the other CF parts I've received have been severely faded, cracked, and otherwise flawed. Somewhat disappointing, but I guess when you buy used stuff off a chat forum the buyer is taking a chance.

So....just a little reminder to ask a million questions before sending payment, and ask for many photos. I'd hate to see anyone else out many hundreds (actually, over $1k) of dollars like I am, with absolute crap for parts to show for it.

Let me guess????? You bought the certain batch of parts recently offered on this forum, riddled with the cracks and scratches that were evident in the pics if studied closely.

Sorry ot hear of your misfortune. Those parts should never even have been offered for resale, they were in such shabby condition.

Hopefully the Porsche karma gods will look kindly on you for your next several purchases. Good luck!!!

Nah, I passed on that batch.

These were odds and ends sourced from multiple people. The pics & decriptions I was given were extremely different than what I received.

Anyway....I'm not trying to boo-hoo. I just want people to be careful and not get taken.

I have a ton of Porsche CF on my 01 and anything that really got beat on by the sun (center console) is weathered to an almost yellow hue. I agree and would ask for hi-res pics if I was buying any used CF

Sorry to hear about you getting bad pieces of cf. When I bought my car 3 years ago, I replaced all of the pieces with cf. I bought many pieces from 6speeders, ebay and some pieces from Sharky. Fortunately for me, all the used pieces were perfect...but probably because they were not old three years ago.
I would contact the seller and see if you have any recourse and try to back out. I am sure if it was a credible 6speeder, they would return your money.

I bought a pair of CF side air vent for my 996 turbo from e-bay. It was green. I saw CF was black.....lol.

After that, i bought mine all CF at the dealer with wholesale price.

Just curious, could these faded carbon pieces be painted? I like the look of the painted center console to match the exterior color of the car. If your carbon peices are fading and look bad and your thinking of getting rid of them anyway, why not get them painted?

Rob, that sucks to hear. I talked to you on the phone and I tried to be honest as possible with you and you made the decesion not to buy. I wish other sellers could of worked with you on your decision like I did(at least I THINK)

I have had my old CF that I replaced for sale in the forums...I have been clear in all of my postings and communication of their condition.

I hope that is not a stab at me wolf because I know I had some PM conversation with you. You were "commited to buy" and I double checked with you, of course never hearing back...

The pieces CAN be recleared if someone wants to get the CF affordably...Dont judge every seller by a certain instance but CERTAINLY be aware of the condition of the individual pieces...

With that said, anyone want some carbon?!

Has anyone done this? I guess you have to get the clear coat stripped and then re-cleared? Is a body shop my best bet?

I'm still quarelling over a few items. If I can't get them returned to the seller, I may try to have them re-cleared.

Thanks to everyone for their concerns.

Carbon fiber has never been known to have lasting beauty.

Weighs nothing and looks great when new though.
