As soon as the silver trim came off I thought of ccwboy. 
The trim and cover itself actually came off the starter button today. The "legs" on the chrome trim deformed slightly thus releasing itself from the locking tab. Fix was simply bending the legs ever so slightly so they could lock back again.
CCWBOY...if you can remove the chrome trim u can find a shop to rechrome it for you.
