Faulty key fob

One of my keys has malfunctioned - now unable to use the remote nor can the car register it when I push the Start switch. I can however still start the car with the key in the ignition. I have replaced the battery and have it checked with the workshop who advised me to replace the fob.

Before I do that, what other options can I explore? The cost of a replacement here is about $1000 including the programming. Is there a cheaper alternative? I have searched the internet with very limited success.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like it is either not a common enough problem or there are no other alternatives. Decision time.
