Check Oil Level - How to read dipstick?

Hi all,

I just had my oil changed 3000 miles ago and now the check oil light is on.

I used the dipstick but struggled to understand the oil level.

I added 1/2 liter (1/2 quart) of oil but the light is still on.

I'm too afraid to add more because I don't want to overfill the engine.

Any advice?

What year is your car? Early cars are known for broken dip stick ends. These cars take close to 15 quarts of oil,how many quarts were billed out on the repair order? I have seen and replaced the level sensor on the bottom of the oil pan due to warning lights when level is correct.

Thanks Bentley tech NY.

My car is 2004. The dipstick end seems to be fine.

One thing I notice is that the light goes away briefly after I check the oil level. However, it re-appears after awhile.

Hi Lilio,
could it be the oilPRESSURE that is not OK?

dipstick has a ribbled portion. With engine COLD, oil should reach the top of this ribbled area (MAX.)
With engine HOT, oil should reach the line about 1/2inch above the top of the ribbled area.

hope this is helpful,
grtz,
christian
