Hi everyone, I wanted some advice on this sound I heard today after shutting vehicle down.
The fans were whirring away but there was another sound on top which like something spinning and laboured. Any ideas? Not heard it before.
Hello ... If I'm right in saying thats quite normal fans running after engine shutdown especially if the engine is really hot in hot weather condtions or if one had been driving in heavy traffic ... mine does the same sometimes ... the fans run on a 30sec or more & shut down ... How long does your fans run on for after shutdown ...

Sounds like normal engine coolant fans "run on" after engine shutdown. The fan motor sounds a little loud, maybe bearings starting to go, but can't really say just through a youtube video.
ALL modern engine management systems program in a fan run on time/ECT/Fan %. These are variable tables and can be modified from factory settings if you can get into the tune files. BUT, entirely not necessary either. Here is a typical tune file with fan settings.
Look at the far right side column. In this particular EMS, the fans can run a total of 300 seconds MAX. The time and speeds the fan actually runs depends on tables the ECU selects from titled "Run Time Zone", "ECT Zone" and "ECT Zone Hi". Also note from the selection boxes, "Enable/Disable" engine coolant temps plus what would be considered a Hi ECT , along with max fan speeds are all variables. In this EMS, and BC of the very high amperage fans draw (40 amps @100% on this car) the max fans speed is limited to 60%
