my 2005 continental gt 3rd brake light is causing problems. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I have seen the threads to remove and replace. I was seeing online people , in other cars , buying a $20 strip led that sticks to the inside of the rear window , then you wire it into existing brake tail light.
Is this an option for my bentley or will this confuse some computer system.
My research (I changed mine out for $1,500) showed it was water infiltration into the wires, or so say the experts on this board. So if the water problem is inboard of your LED, then it won't work, if it's outboard then it might.
But have you looked closely at the area? How are you planning on running the wiring? don't you have to take out the light to get to the wire tunnel?
I think conceptually, it might work, but in reality, unless you're drilling holes, it doesn't seem like an easy answer.
So the idea is this. The current 3rd brake light sometimes works, sometimes does not, sounds like water is in there. I intend to leave the 3rd brake ljght as is. Not touch it. I plsn to buy a strip led light and will place it at the bottom edge of rear window, on the inside. Ill run wires, hidden, to exusting rear tail rake light. So ill have 1 or 2 3rd brake lights showing when I brake. Its a little untidy but who will see it ?
Mine was almost certainly water-related. It worked fine, then I drove in driving rain, at which time it quit.
I think your answer might work, and as you imply, who really cares? I think the light is important, we're all so used to seeing it that I could see getting rear-ended without it.
I do wonder if you're going to get an error with more current draw, only way you can figure out whether the car will object to the extra LEDs. I bet you'll get away with it, but you could also easily generate a car computer error.
Have you run the codes on the car? My third brake-light, when it died, produced a brake light error.
Thank you. My tech will check thr codes, he feels there will not be a problem adding a 4th light but lets see. I wonder if a little sealant applied on the corners of the current light would help . My main concern with a 4th strip , at the lower side of the window, is will it show when not illuminated. In other words how it will look. I think illl look for a small strip or unit, maybe 6" long and essentuslly mount to parcel shelf, discrete.
My replacement wasn't that bad, it was about a thousand bucks, I thought it was $1,500. The part is expensive and that looks like four hours of labor, so it was a lot of work, and I know they did it the "easy" way suggested on this forum.
