335i or M5 (e39): Best high performance sport sedan and DD?

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum, but have surfed around for a while.

I am searching for a 4-door sport sedan to replace my 95 M3, since I need more versatility to commute and take my kids to school.

I am targeting a budget of approximately $50k for my next car including mods. My primary need is a 4-door that performs like a sports car. I want the car to be fast, handle great including the occasional track day, luxury, comfort and quality. I want a car I can drive in the corners aggressively, but still be a great daily driver. Being able to modify to make a lot faster would be a plus.

I am considering either a 2003 M5 (e39) or 2007 335i 4-door. I have driven many M5s and feel they are amazing all around sedans that can do almost everything, though a little heavy for track work. But, they can be purchased for about half of what they originally sold for new representing an amazing value. However, I have read they are moderately reliable and can be very expensive to fix, since they are no longer within the factory warranty.

I have only driven a couple 335i’s and none of them aggressively, but have read tons of rave reviews in the magazines and its easy modability for more power and improved performance. From a luxury perspective, the M5 is clearly nicer.

The last consideration is depreciation. I will sell the car in about 2-3 years and would like a car that retains value as well. I would guess the M5 would depreciate the least, since it is almost 5 years old.

Finally, should I up the budget another $10k and get a 06 V10 M5 and keep it stock? I heard the new M5 has reliability issues specifically the SMG. Is this true?

What do you guys think? TIA

James

why not wait for the new M3 sedan? Not sure what the pricing would be, but the best value is definately gonna be a E39 M5. You can get one in good shape for under $30,000 and still have plenty left over for mods. That's what I would do.
