Drove the new M5..
Drove the new M5..
F-1 team Williams is announcing it's new drivers for the coming F-1 season here in Bahrain, so BMW sent over the new M6 and M5. the cars will be used tomorrow, thursday, on the F-1 track here in Bahrain for a photo oppertunity to show off the new Williams drivers.
The M5 was a dark blue with tan and the M6 was just like the pictures, a strange maroon with black inside.
Now as much as I hate the way that the 5-series looks under Bangle's design, I got to admit that the M5 looks a whole lot better than the pictures. The M6 had me on the fence, I wanted to like it but I couldn't bring myself to.
I had a choise of driving either so I chose the M5. I was limited to just 5000rpm's per dealer rep instructions because, he said, that these are pre-production cars that don't even have the final spec changes.
I step in, start the car, engage the "sport" button, thus unleashing the full BHP500 available, and head off.
First impression is that the SMG works way better than the system that I have in my Maserati. The car is smooth with power, that seems, at my beck and call, anytime I press the accelerator.
The corners were dispatched with a minimum of fuss and the whole car seems to want to be revved to the redline. The brakes look huge but I didn't get the chance to really test them. The handling was leaps and bounds ahead of my old E-39 M5.
Overall impressions were very positive, AMG better be ready for a counter punch because this car is impressive, to say the least. I tried to stick to the 5000 rpm limit, but I didn't count on the car downshifting to second when I pressed the gas for more go. I can't wait until dealer gets a demo. My 20 minute ride was over way too soon for a much better impression of the car. It deserves a full-on thrashing and, as soon as I get the chance, I'll be back with more details.
