Damn that's fugly. I'm assuming they didn't have the cajones to put the V8 in it? Still the 3.2 liter inline six I am guessing.
It had a 3.0 liter i-6 not the 3.2, but now the Z4M that you see there is having the current E46 M3 3.2 l 6 cylinder dropped in.. Should be a very quick car

Actually, Mike is correct, the '01-'02 M Roadster and Coupe had the same S54 engine.

its a 343hp I6...its more of an exercise to boost sales than it being a true M car.

Thank you. Yes, Mike is correct.

About the only thing that would make me look past the fugly exterior is if they put the 5.0 liter V10 and 7 speed SMG from the E60 M5 into that car.

That would be interesting.

Actually what are you saying We were on topic of the Z4 and Z4m, not the original S54 Mroadster or coupes, thanks.. The Z4 only came witht he 3.0 liter like i said, the mcoupe and roadster were not even mentioned and on a totally different topic!

i highly doubt with the amount they will sale that it will boost sales that much. Yes usuing a proven 3.2 I6 is cheaper, but id rather have the proven engine and just dropping a V8 because they can. Once the new M3 gets its V8, then they will update the M-Roadsters, and the Coupe with it.

The last MZ produced had the 3.2 liter 6, not the 3.0 liter 6 - meaning they didn't change the engine for the new generation. The MZ4 is what this thread is about, not the Z4 - hence the pictures of the MZ4. Nothing confusing here.

Regardless, the point is they didn't put the damn V8 in the thing! I thought they had a 4.0 liter V8 lined up for the M3/M4/MZ4.

The last "M" z was based off the Z3, it had the 3.2l.. You just said it yourself this thread is about the Z4, there hasent been any 3.2 liter m engine it it yet until these photos and this Z4M.. I still dont get the relevance

That's weak .. the motor is weak the design is weak. Had they flared out the fenders and put in a V8 .... that would be worhty of the M badge.

I suspect that this is going to be much like the introduction of the Z3 ///M. We'll get the previous generation's ///M3 engine, and then when the new one is released they'll update this car. Unfortunetly, the car is ugly, and looks like it has downs. I'll take a Z3 over this anyday.

The M sport division had initally said that they do not plan to build a m coupe because the platform does not allow it to be a true sportscar...hence why there is no mx5, or x5m or xm5....and since they don't want to do it up properly I understand why they wouldnt put the brand new v8 for the upcoming m3 into it.

Uhhh... the S54 M3 engine is weak? 333 hp with a 8k redline?
The new V8 is for the E90 M3, no Z4 is going to steal the E90 M3's thunder. As for BMW's M division they never said the Z4 wasn't a true sports car- why would they say that?
They don't get the X5 because it's not a SMG or manual tranny. Say what you will about the Z4's styling, it's a huge jump in chassis development over the Z3.
This car is 200 pounds lighter than the E46 M3 with a better platform and the same engine. It will be a great car. The coupe will be even better and look a heck of a lot better imo.
