BMW odometer question.

My friend was looking to buy an 02 BMW M3 at a small independent (non BMW francise) lot here in MD, and I noticed something weird on the dash. I had an 02 M3 cab and he has an 01 328ci, and neither of our cars had this mysterious red dot on the dash.
The red dot is between the miles and trip miles. When I checked the manual, it did not say or indicate something, so I think something is wrong with either the odometer or it has been tampered with. Does anyone know. Thanks.
