Pics at the autoshow were 1 step forward. Some of these, especially the profile are 2 steps back. Imola looked so hot on the E46 but is not flattering on the new car IMO. I will be picking up my deposit and waiting until I see some of these on the street.

Maybe I'm a little confused, but what will the "power" button enable? I thought you'd have access to full engine capacity from start on the M3?

Guys, it's not really a debatable topic; the e92 M is NOT what my heritage is all about. BMW gave it a V8 rather than the great inline 6. They added weight. They made it bigger. They did everything that M is not. I'm not saying it won't be a good car, but I AM saying it won't be a real M.

I'm with you there. Although I know I'll be blown away once I drive this thing, I can't help but feel BMW are capitalising on the M-hype and moving what was once the essence of the M concept towards the CSL range instead. We're seeing it with Audi's S and RS range too..

It'll surely be great for profits (as M enthusiasts will fork out more for CSL:s) and "regular" M cars offer more conventional characteristics (equipment, comfort etc. etc)

i agree with both of you as well. the new Ms are moving away from what they are all about. the used to be about having a sports car mentality but without the price tag of exotics like Porsche, ferrari, and lambo. now they add weight, and creature comforts that M enthusiasts dont, for the most part, care for. i think you are right that they either make an M that is like any other normal bmw, and then build the CSL which is what M division is all about. only Porsche, and Ferrari IMO stick to their main objectives.

feels like they're doing more of a mercedes rather than a bmw when going in this direction. they are loosing what they originally stood for, the ultimate driving machine.. they should do their thing and keep on making sports cars that can carry more than two passengers. drop that half ton of electronic stuff

Engine management with a wide range of additional functions.

The MSS60 control unit is more than “just” a conventional engine management system in the direct sense of the word. With its hardware, software and functions having been developed completely by BMW M GmbH, MSS60 is able to support numerous M-specific functions on the clutch, transmission, steering and brakes.

Precisely this is why the driver of the new BMW M3 is also able, simply by pressing the Power Button on the selector lever cover, to activate an even more sporting and dynamic driving program. This provides an even more progressive control map for accelerator travel acting on the throttle butterfly opening, with the dynamic transition functions on electronic engine management showing an even more direct, spontaneous response.

As soon as the driver starts the engine, the control system automatically switches to the more comfortable of the two programs. The driver nevertheless has the option to preconfigure and activate the change in programs in the MDrive control unit, which also offers another, extra-sporting and dynamic program. Last but certainly not least, engine management also performs a wide range of on-board diagnostic functions using various diagnostic routines for servicing at the workshop, just as it offers other sophisticated functions and masterminds various peripheral units around the engine.

will the magic button unleash extra horsepower as it's big brother too? or is it just for the butterlfy valves, suspension, gearbox etc?
