BMW X5 or Range Rover HSE
Rangie would have my personal preference but I'm kind of a LR fan. The X5 is a nice car but the 03 model is the old bodystyle now whereas the Rover will carry on in its current form (albeit facelifted) until 2010. In the end it's probably a matter of your own taste since these cars are about as far apart as SUV's get. On one hand you have the road orientated, smaller and nimbler X5 and on the other is the comfortable, offroad capable and larger Rover. MPG #'s and servicing is gonna cost you roughly the same amount of $ for both cars.

That is true, x5 looks more dated now, but should be more reliable.

Regardless, generally speaking reliability is hugely improved over the P38 platform and since the Rangie is (in part) designed by BMW I wouldn't worry about it too much.
If you go X5, def. consider the 4.8, it's a beast.
We owned a 2004 Range Rover HSE "Westminster Edition" and although it drove very well, the reliability was awful! The only thing worse than the reilability was the dealer support (Orlando and Merritt Island, FL). I cannot comment on the BMW, but definately avoid the 'Rover. If you must have the 'Rover, then get the flatbed to tow it on, ours stranded us twice. BTW, we purchased it new and never missed any scheduled maintenance.
i just picked up a CPO RR HSE about 5 months ago - no major failures, but i had a bunch of little things replaced under warranty -- its an absolute awesome truck - love it - but would never buy unless it comes with a warranty and you need to have some patience
also on the plus side, Mark III (03 and newer) will be the current model until sometime in 2012 - unless you get the new X5, do you really want an outdated SUV ?

i had a westminster edition full range for a while not too long ago and i loved it. i generally hate SUV's but that is one SUV that is just classic.
but i love the bmw also, however, I would ONLY get the 4.8is personally. also they are two different cars. the BMW is more sporty and has almost no off roading capability, comes with like 90" rims and super sport summer tires.
range, although not the old off road vehicle that it used to be, is still more focused toward that end. i got nothing but compliments in the range and it was a pleasure to own/drive.
as far as reliability, i would agree with others, the BM should be more reliable but keep in mind that the X5 is made in the USA and i have at least one friend who's x5 has been in the shop continuously and from what i hear from others it is not the most reliable bmw car.
but frankly, i dont think u'll be disappointed with either. but my vote at the moment is for the RR
