Cayman S over the base 997?
are they call something different outside of US

I have both the Cayman and 911 in my garage. I had it open today while I was working on my car, and I heard my neighbors talking about the cars:
"Dad look, there's 2 Porsches there! I really like the white one! It looks really cool. Its faster too, right?"
"I don't think so, son. That's a 911 in there, but I'm not too sure what the white one is." The dad starts peeking in to read the name.
The son pushes on: "I think its faster. Its the newer of the 2, and I bet its more expensive also!" The son points at the single exhaust tip of the Cayman. "Look at the big exhaust tip! Last time I heard it, it was louder than the black car. Can we buy one?"
The dad started yelling at him as they walked off. Hilarious! But it shows that many people are unfamiliar with the Cayman and its exotic looks!

I know that the regular Cayman (non-S) is. That thing screams at low revs, where as my Carrera S has a helmholtz resonator that suppresses sound at low rpms. I actually prefer it though. Must be getting older

Stereotypes are dumb. I've never been a 911 fan--the rear engine thing means it feels funny, and they've been difficult and recalitrant at the very limit of adhesion for decades. The Cayman can be pushed without fear of biting. But it doesn't have a back seat. If I wanted a 911 I would have gotten one, but I didn't 
The way I see it, Porsche has learned so much over the years making what was essentially a poor design handle well that when you give them something proper (mid-engine, light weight, etc) it's amazing what they can do.

^^^ I agree with your statements above regarding dumb stereotypes. I owned a Boxster S before my 997S, and I still miss it!
Owning a Boxster S was fun not only for its great handling and mid-engine dynamics, but also because of the "underdog" status that came with it. Everyday I drove it, I had fun, and a lot of people would try to race me on the freeway (and lose)! The Boxster was so nimble that cutting through traffic or going through a twisty would be a task easily done with confidence. Many other (heavier) cars had a rough time keeping up, regardless of horsepower!
Over the years, though, I learned that Porsche marketing got us all figured out. Boxster S owners wanted more power, hence the creation of the Cayman S (before they shared the same engine). Cayman S owners want more power: only option is a 911. 911 owners want every kind of 911! Carrera S, GT3, Turbo!
Damn that Porsche marketing!
All jokes aside, though, its really YOUR money and what YOU are happy with. Screw what every one else thinks of your car. They aren't driving it everyday with a smile on their faces.

i enjoy my boxster S so much. i was zipping though houston wednesday on my way home from new orleans. houston has real freeways, six to eight lanes wide and everyone doing around 80. it's great because there are lots of german cars, audis, BMWs, porsches, VWs all hauling butt. of course, there are pick-ups too. and, folks in ragged hoopties that have to be running at top speed to play in freeway games.

I had a Boxster S for 5 years. I test drove a 997S, coupe and cab, and honestly liked the Boxster better. It was much more fun to drive -- I liked the light and nimble handling. The 997S had more power but not enough to blow me away. Ah, but this summer I bought a 997TT. OK, now that power does blow me away. Wow. But I still love the Boxster and probably choose it or a Cayman over a NA 911.
