DIY Brake Pad replacement question

My buddy has a cayman and the brake-wear light just came on. I had a 996 and threw on new pads and sensors no problem. Like 10 minutes per wheel because I was being extra careful.

Has anyone changed their pads on a cayman, and if so, is it similar or identical to a 996?

Any recommonded pad vendors?

The dealer told him he needed to do pads, sensors and rotors? WTF?

Anyone know the link to a DIY on 6speed or rennlist?

When I upgraded my 987 brakes several months ago, I upgraded to steel lines and flushed the fluids with Castrol SRF. Generally, the sensors are reusable, but in your wear light came on, so it would have to be replace and it's not that expensive. I got mine from Pelican Parts, but I believe you can get them from our sponsors as well. Changing rotors are optional in my option, but grab a micrometer from Pep Boys and measure the thickness....If this is your first pad change and don't do any crazy braking then the original rotors should still be good. Some would say change the retention brackets and pins too.....

Changing the pads on a Porsche is pretty much straight forward like any other car....maybe an extra screw here and there.

They are all pretty similar, only component size changes. When doing brakes, the right way is to either machine or replace the rotors. Euro cars wear the rotors along with the pads so if the pads are low or gone then its time to get new rotors as well. You see this on the rotor as a trench or lips along the edges of the rotor surface where the pad touches under braking. Even if it is not that pronounced they should still be switched out. If you’re going to do it, do it right. Porsche brakes are actually easier and faster to do then most other cars. Suncoast has rotor sets for 232.00 so cost shouldn’t be standing in your way. Be glad they’re not pccb.

rotors are replaced if
1. they are thinner than spec stamped on them
2. if they have cracks from one drilled hole to next
3. if rotors are warped or worn unevenly (measured with a caliper measurer at differnt spots)

usually, replace rotor every other pad change is common. dealers always change more things to make profit i think.

That isn't true... if the rotors are warped or worn past their limit then they need to be replaced... but a set of rotors will most times be good through a few sets of pads. As far as the difficulty, it is basically the same as the 996.
