Optimum Tires' size and type

Which is the optimum tires' size gor 19inch wheels for A Cayman S?

I am using at my Boxster S 987 3.8 X51 Michelin Pilot Cup 235/35/19 front and 265/30/19 rear but the miles/gear have been reduced (due to the 265/30 instead of 265/35) and I only make 2500miles with them ( I do press them...)

I have heard that some people have used 245/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear. Is that good? Do we have to use spacers for these dimensions? Will the dashboard show me wrong miles because of the 245/35 front (instaed of the 245/30 as it should be but the 245/30 dimension doesn't have many tires available)?

Furthermore, has anybody used the Bridgestone RE050 pole position? I am thinking changing the cup tires for these ( but increasing as I mentioned the dimension). I use my car on the road but only in weekends (I drive quite like a maniac) and for trips. Cup tires have superb traction but they wear out too damn fast (and the ratios have become too short for my power)!

Thank you for you help

A darn good question... : ) I've got a 987 Boxster S and have been following posts on this subject. It appears most folks go with the 235/35-19 in the front on 8 or 8.5 inch rims, although there was someone who was running 245/35. In the rear, I've seen someone go as large as 295/30 on a 10.5 inch rim (I think). I've also seen someone use 285/35.

I'd be interested in hearing what the "experts" have to say as I'm considering some new rims and tires....THANKS!

I think the 245/35 and 275/35 will work best. That is what I will install on my street 987, when the factory tread is gone. But I do have spacers.

These are both going to be slightly larger OD than the factory spec, but I dont like the look of putting smaller diameter tires, unless you lower the car. The factory stock space between the tires and the fender looks already too big to me. a smaller tire OD makes it worst to me.

On my track 987, I have 245/35 and 275/30 rear. But the car is lowered 1.5inches.

285 or 295 tires on a 987 is just for show. In fact my testing of these tires on my track car, show that while I get more rear grip, the car understeers. So you are reducing the cornering ability of the car by upsetting the front to rear balance.

Just to be clear... when you widen the tires you are not 'adding' more tire contact to the road. The overall contact patch surface area is exactly the same. A wider tire gives less longitudinal grip and more lateral grip.

Appreciate the feedback jonas. My 987 Boxster S has PASM so is 10 mm lower then without it, but otherwise sits on stock springs. Looking at the 245/35 and 275/35 OD's, looks like we are only talking .3 and .2 inches respectively. Not much of a difference but it will make up some of that fender to tire gap.

Again...thanks for the feedback : )

I'm running 245/35 0n 19x8.5 w/38mm offset and 285/35 on 19x10.5 w/ 48mm offset. No spacers required. I could run 255 and 295 with these offsets.
