Am I nuts???

I had driven owned many different cars, but never a Porsche. My last car was a DB9 with sport pack. While a great car, just too many little things regarding the fit and finish which really bothered me; especially given the price.

When I purchased it, the other car I was looking at was a 911 turbo; 996.
Well..... Thinking that AM may have gotten their act together; I placed an order for a DBS. Had a chance to test drive one during an introduction day, like I stole it, and found it to be far superior to my 9, however it just did not seem special enough to justify the price.

Drove a GT Speed the same way and placed an order. This was partly due to wife as she loved the Bentley, however I tend to lean toward something more sporting. As time moved forward and economy started to crumble, I decided that I just did not have the stomach for the 100K deprecation over 3 years.
This took me back to the Porsche dealer where I was ready to place an order for that 09 Turbo. While I was there I saw this cute little RS 60 sitting there. It looked so nice that it aroused my curiosity. Lets see; convertible, two trunks, sporty looks, nice visibility, controls nicely balanced. Could I possibly be satisfied with Porsches cheap car??? Well I thought I better test drive it to make sure I wasn’t missing something.
To my surprise the test drive reviled a far superior handling car from most any other I have driven. Most importantly, it was the most fun car I have driven. At the end of the day, fast is just impressive for a short distance, unless you like to serve jail time, but the fun in this thing never stops at any speed. The turbo just does not feel this connected. Kind of sloppy by comparison.

Drove it today after 3500 miles and it just keeps on getting better. The PCCBs are by far the best brakes I have ever tested.

Very happy with the RS and loving every minute. As for the luxury and comfort. Well, I can always take the Range Rover or pick up a used Rolls next year, but the Boxster is a keeper.

So….. Am I nuts?

I think that the Boxster gets a bad rap because of its price point. I bought a Cayman S by choice, I test drove 911s (though admittedly the Turbo is a bit more $$ than I could justify) and I simply thought the Cayman was a better ride. It's the mid-mounted engine in the Boxster/Cayman that I think makes it handle so well. The 911s handly entirely different in my opinion. I came close to getting an RS60 but as my condo building only has 1 spot for me, the Cayman was a more sensible daily driver in Chicago and it gave me more cargo space. The RS60 is the best Boxster around, so you did right in my book!

you're not crazy at all. for those that own or have driven a boxster, we completely understand where you are coming from! i love our 996, don't get me wrong. it's fast, sounds great, and the 0 to 60 compared to my car, well....no comparison. but everything about my boxster brings a big smile to my face everytime i start her engine and drop her top. it's just a fun car to have!

best wishes!

You're not nuts. The turbo is a status symbol (just imagine how many guys dreamt of owning one since they're a kid), but the Boxster/Cayman is a definitely a driver's car.

Had the 996TT..... still have the Boxster S!

Drove it yesterday and had a $hit-eating grin on my face all day.

All my buddies are lambo guys and Vantage guys. They still let me hang with them.

Thanks,

Been watching your post Dave and would like a little more power.

I have talked to Ruf, however I think I will go the 350 route offered by Sharkwerks toward the end of the year.

I would do it sooner, however I have to sell it to the CFO first.

You're not nuts at all!

Some cars are more than the sum of their statistics - they just add up to more than you get on paper. The Boxster S is one of those cars.

I'm not biased at all.... We'll have to start an RS60 register!

i only put 3 months on mine before winter - lot of fun but i miss the extra power of the 911.

of course it has been in storage since December, so could just be an instance of absence?

Yep. One of the most fun cars to drive at any price. Most smiles per mile someone said. Those who dismiss the Boxster have other priorities or they just haven't driven one much.

Sloopy,
Thanks for kudos. See my recent thread on the Supercharger. You may want to wait until that thing comes around to make any decisions. Until then; Drop the Top and Drive it.

Great post! I have an 03 turbo in L.A. and with the traffic and the cops, I can't use the potential of my car. If I had a 987 S, I would really enjoy it, the weather here is beautiful. You're not crazy.

I rented a 997 Turbo for a weekend in Dallas and own a 05 Boxster. While the 997 is a beast of a car and is on my list to get, there is something about the nimble little Boxster and that convertible top that makes it a lot more fun to just drive around. You're not crazy. We all know of things in this world that are worth well more than their price.

Yea, its kind of funny. I become more and more fond of it every day. Can't wait to get started on some mods. First will be RS350 kit with LWF. Next will be some carbon interior pieces.
