From reading a few past threads, these "black chrome" crests still have a lot of gold in them, albeit in a darker shade.

Yes they are worth gold now !! lol .

I tried sanding priming and painting the gold OEM crest but it kept flaking off for some reason .apply too much paint and to cannot see the nice little detail of the crest design ,apply too little and it flakes off so i finally bought the all black hood crest after accidentially finding it on then net looking for a silver and black one .
so glad i did now

Try plastidip everyone. Its a spray paint which sprays rubberized vinyl and shrinks onto the part. Its 100% removable because once it dries, it dries on like a film of vinyl, like a sticker. It dries over whatever you paint and shrinks over the part. In doing this, you wont lose the definition and detail in the emblem, and you'll still have enough paint where it won't flake. Plastidip does not flake. Its very well know on the VW forums for painting wheels on the cheap. Ive painted a few sets of wheels with it for an a5 and an H2, and its 100% removable if you mess up, yet it is very durable.
