I have a 2000 Boxster S that I love and has suffered the IMS failure. I am torn what to do. I know from many searches that I have a number of options for the engine.

I have read about the 911 engine swap and installing another Boxster S engine. I am wondering about fixing the engine I have in the car now and stroking it. I have looked for information about this upgrade but haven't found reliable info. So my questions are. What parts do I need? How large is the stroked engine? How much power would I gain? Of course what is the cost?

The last option I am considering is is creating a turboed or supercharged monster by lowering compression and using beefier internal parts. Will the TPC turbo kit work well with this idea.

I have an idea what the cost will be and the performance if I go with a 911 engine or the Boxster engine exchange. But I am unsure about the other two options . So which is the best in terms of cost versus hp.

 

I'm sorry to hear it. Doesn't the IMS failure do too much collateral damage to salvage the engine? If so, that option is out. There is a vendor with an upgraded bearing design that keeps it from happening again. EBS?

John sorry to hear of your troubles. In some cases the engine is rebuildable but in more cases they are not. If it is rebuildable then the cost of having that done and upgrading it with all the options you speak of will cost you 18k without the turbo, turbo is another 10k , to have someone install a good used Carrera Engine would cost you less (around 12k-15 all depending on which engine you find and what you do to it)and you will have more fun with it plus if your engine is rebuildable it has some core value. pm me if you want more info

 

Ok update. First thanks for the info. Talked to my mechanic Monday and confirmed the worst, engine is done. Due to the lack of available funds, car is going to sit for a while. I figure I need at least six months to save for the 911 engine swap. At least I have a clean, dry, secure, place to store the car in my garage. Hate I can't drive the car when it is nice.
