987 Boxster - double DIN, 8" subs in doors and rear speaker kit install
#16
I traced mine back from the rear tail light housing. Just isolate the reverse wire, or go wiring diagram and find color. It took me a while to be sure I got the correct wire for the reverse cam. Then, I got the bright idea to hook camera into head unit using one of the camera inputs….so it comes on when you place the vehicle in reverse BUT I can also switch to it as an input and drive down the road watching the expressions of people I'm passing! It's fun!

Hey guys, sorry for the late replies.
1) Have not tried the pass-through nav yet (honestly never take the Boxster anywhere needing navigation).
2) Complete parts and price list is in the my write-up.
3) The trim piece is Eurospeed. Search "Boxster double din" on Ebay and you'll find.
4) Someone asked about reverse wire in the instructions. I was confused by that too initially. The deal is that only applies to the Cayman, not the Boxster.

Hi Eric,
I've been following your write up, very well done.
Did you connect the illumination signal wire? It would seem to me that the cigarette lighter light would be best?
How did you do the reverse? To the taillight housing?
Also, my FM reception isn't working. I had two anntenna looking wires on the back of my porsche nav system, a black and a yellow. I have tried both and neither of them seem to provide any reception? It looks like one of them may go to my old porsche navigation unit in front trunk. Do you know which one is which?
I haven't done the speakers but that is next, it's such an awesome car, with such a ****ty sound system, it's almost comical. I thought the new headunit and the PNP speakers would help... the sound quality still sucks.
Thanks,
Aaron

Great write-up! I just purchased an '05 with the Bose and Navi system, and I can't stand the stock radio. I'm looking to replace the head unit, but I can't find an adapter to maintain my steering wheel controls for a JVC unit I want. I've seen one that's compatible with Kenwood I believe.

FYI, re: wiring to the tweeter. I just got a 2005 Boxster with base stereo, not even the "Plus" version. This config is simply 2 dash tweeters and 2 6.5" mid/woofers in the doors. That's it.
I popped one of the tweeters out and found that it has a crossover capacitor wired to it right on the back of the tweeter. My guess is that this is the entire extent of the crossover in this system. No other components.
This very simple system probably has a good initial step up which is just to replace the door speakers with high quality coax speakers that have a good crossover built in (12 dB/octave would be what I'd look for). The dash tweeters could be turned off, disconnected, or one could install better ones (with capacitor in series, or a 12 dB/octave high pass) and play with EQ to balance the sound.
Love the work you did and the detailed description. It's encouraging me to get in there and improve this one.

Putting it all together...
So how does it sound? Great! Excellent clarity. Deep, rich bass. The doors DO NOT RATTLE which was something I was really worried about. The CDT speakers provide warm midtones and clear but not piercing highs. The center-channel speaker is still there but not hooked up. Don't miss it at all. Besides, 99.99% of music is recorded in stereo and not 5.1 so the center channel is just a gimmick anyways.
I can play the stereo way louder than I need to even at 70MPH with the top down. Bluetooth works great. What more can you ask for? Feel free to ask any questions!
