I just bought a 2008 Cayman S with 8000 miles and when I start in Drive it starts in 2nd gear. If I put it in manual it goes down to 1st gear, is this normal? Shouldn't it start in 1st gear when in the Automatic mode?

Same here, it is to save gas. I hardly ever let the car shift itself. I use sport mode and the tip tronic controls.
However you should get used to the kick down function of auto mode. very quick down shift to the lowest available gear, works well before corners.

 

That's why I got a good ol' stick. But yeah, my auto BMW does the same thing.
