Maybe your old airbox just collecting dust in the garage.

From what I understand, there is only one aftermarket option that replaces the airbox on 987 cars and it ain't cheap (the rest are simply replacement filters). Add to that... to install said aftermarket component, you either have to drop the motor to remove the airbox intact, or you destroy the airbox in order to remove it.
That said, it doesn't surprise me that there aren't lots of these things clogging up garage shelves everywhere.
